Name the dog after any of the famous mages who have spells named after them:

Mordenkainen
Otto
Bigby
Melf
Snilloc
Tenser
Rary
Khelben

Then, when his other gamer buddies ask about the name, he can say his puppy is actually the original arch-mage, and that he polymorphed said arch-mage into a dog when they annoyed him too badly! Even if it doesn't impress, they'll think your friend is insane and so won't ever kill his characters for fear of what he'd do to them; perfect on every level!
