and i thought the club incident in chicago earlier this week was bad - that was only 21 people. and yes, i was thinking about who i knew that could have been there, but i haven't heard anything so far...

I was just there. I decided to give in to the urge to make the drive over, and I stood with the people watching all the flashing lights and news vans. While I was there, a guy with a camera walked by saying that the count was now 90 (CNN.com still says 86, so we'll see). He also spoke briefly about a body he saw, and how hot the fire must have been to do what it did to it.

It was somewhat peaceful and somber. The sun was setting. I felt ghoulish, though, so I left quickly. I just wanted to be there briefly.

This is on the way to where I watch movies. All the cars had their headlights on. It's a right turn off a very familiar road to me. It's so bizarre to me, and I don't think I'm processing it all yet.

On a lighter note, I heard last night that some friends of mine were actually talking about going to see Great White if they finished what they were doing soon enough. They didn't, and thus didn't go. What were they doing? They were playing D&D.

EDIT: I'm just seeing on the local news now: 95 confirmed dead

is it just me or does the world seem to be on a bad streak of luck these past few years? everytime i turn around there are more terrible things happening. Here in Guangdong province people have died from a mystery illness. Last year there was the Bali bombing. Then there are all the other things...

Well this is happy at least

As someone who lost a friend in the Bali attack on a similiar establishment, I mourn for this tragedy as another calamity that should not have happened.

The power of panic is not to be underestimated, and its nature is to come forth in those times when reason is far more important, and when fear becomes a terrible overide on the self. How many of these deaths are preventable? How can we stress the importance of staying low and riding out the danger while everyone else flees?

Even if we ever find the answers, those who died amid terror and self-preservation will not be brought back. And that is no small loss.

Farewell. Farewell. Farewell...

We're starting to find out people that are missing... and one of us (Wee Jas) said one of the people who died was the guy to get him into D&D, years and years ago. Pretty sad stuff. I still have yet to talk to a friend who expects to have lost several people.
