[OT] Titan, the Wargame

Verdigris

First Post
I hate to be so self-indulgent, but I can't contain myself. I have just managed to acquire (by trading away 7 Nova "Lost Worlds" books) a copy of the original Avalon Hill game:

Titan, the Monster Fantasy Slugathon Wargame

I love the Kinzia card game "Titan" that came out a few years ago, too, but the original war game is totally different. It been well over a decade since I played it and I simply can't wait. Problem is my pals can't commit 2 to 12 hours until a week and a day... I hope I can survive.

Anybody out there feel my pain?

Yeah, I recently dug out my old copy of AH's "Civilization" and couldn't get 6 guys together to give up a day to play it. Sometimes I miss college ;)

Titan rocks!!!

It's my favorite board-style wargame, cuz it doesn't usually take three hours for it to be your turn again!

And I never heard of this card game thingie you're talking about....

At Gen Con I wandered around in the mini hall one night, and saw folks playing in the Titan tourney. I'm in next year baby, I love that game.

I watched for a few rounds (watching Titan is slooooow) and one of the players looked up and smirked "terrible spectator game, you have no idea what's in what stack." So I tapped one of his stacks and said, "your Titan's in there."

Blew his mind. :D

PS

"I'm up for a quick game of Titan" used to be our gang's slang for "I've got all day with nothing to do" :) Actually, amongst experienced players who don't hem and haw all day, a six-player game of Titan can easily be over in 3-4 hours. The thing that makes the game go on forever is that inexperienced (or not very good) players want to play out every darn fight. Learning when to just flee and give somebody else 1/2 the experience is really important.

Colossus

Try this, its a java version of titan. You can play alone against the computer or online with other people.

quickly raises havoclad from 'unknown' to 'worshipped' on the Hero-O-Meter

Thank you! That looks wicked cool!

Titan and Civilization - the games that ate my weekend!

I've played Titan since the late '80s. I've also played the card game, Titan: The Arena, but the original board game is much better. Titan is one of those games that, for years, I've wished someone had turned into a computer game, one that could be played on-line against other players.

And then along came Colossus... !

I've had Colossus downloaded and installed on my system for about six months now, and I've played quite a bit of it; both against the computer AI, and on-line against old wargaming buddies. In fact, I've probably played more games of Titan - er, Colossus - in the past six months than I have played the original board game throughout the past 15 years!

One thing that makes Colossus such a blast is that it is MUCH quicker to play than the original board game. The main reason for this, I believe, is because when it's your turn and you roll the dice to move, all your possible destinations on the board are automatically plotted out and highlighted for you, for each stack you own. Thus, players are much quicker taking their turns. (Another reason Colossus is much quicker to play is because combat itself is quicker, without the rolling of all those dice and the management of all those hit point chits.)

Here's another website where you can find out about Titan and Colossus, and access links to download Colossus...

I've found the game of Colossus is quite functionable and stable with 2-3 players, on-line. This may be the best freeware I've ever encountered!
