Close, but not that close :/

I'm from Petoskey... smallish town about... 70-ish miles from you. I go to traverse every two weeks to the only gaming store I know of around here... Hocus Pocus, I gather you know of it?

The owner of Hocus Pocus used to have a board up to post games and gamers on, I don't know if he still does... I know he lets people game on tables in his comic book shop, which is right across the hallway from his gaming store.

What I want to know is: have you ever greeted anybody with the line, "my name is David Weaver, but you can call me Tsyr"?

Hong "and if not, why the hell not?" Ooi

Uh, yes, actualy. And I do get called that IRL a fair amount... its the name I've used since Quake, and alot of people around here actualy met me as Tsyr. ;p

It's remarkable how few people can pronounce it, though.

How do you pronounce it, out of interest?

I would guess it to be like Sire, only with the opening sound being the 'ts' of, say 'gets'. That about right? :)

I thought it would be something like Ts-i-r

Slightly more like an 'i' than in Deer for instance. (can't do phonetic script here...)

Kinda... It's actualy sorta a cross between "sir" and "seer". The secret is, if you move your mouth to prounounce it, your doing it wrong. Your mouth keeps the same shape for the entire word, only your tounge changes position. The closest way to write it phoneticly is "zeer", but that's not exactly right either.

*shrug*

Maybe it's not so remarkable that no one can pronounce it :) I always thought it was fairly easy, but maybe I've been reading the ol' cthullian manuscripts too much...

Yeah. That's it. Sorta. :) Read what I wrote above... It's sorta a cross between an "i" and a "ee" sound. It's the "i" sound in words like "in" and "is", basicly, if you can comprehend that sound not starting a word.

Yup, too much Cthullian script for me...

Speaking Dutch helps. That sound is the sound commonly used for the 'i' in the Dutch language.
