I did not see the series, saw the movie, really enjoyed it, then read the first books, and enjoyed them even more. They're great stuff, you're missing something. I don't know if I would have liked the movie as much if I had read the novels beforehand.
Thankfully it's not a problem for you.

I know I love
parts of the movie - I think it's got one of the best casts assembled for a film, it's just that the script falls into a big hole in the middle of the film and I perish of boredom. (Exaggerating for dramatic effect, of course!)
Mind you, that's after seeing it too many times, the first couple of times I thought it was better.
Read Dune many times, though. Read Amber Chronicles many times as well, especially when I was playing the game.
The one problem with Amber, as I see it, is that the heart of the book is Corwin's storytelling: him being arrogant, getting it wrong, and eventually growing into a character of immense stature.
This could go horribly wrong in a mini-series.
OTOH, I've now got the LotR film to show me how great works can also be adapted to make great films. And I've read LotR more than Dune & Amber...
Cheers!
