OT (TV) Amber coming to Sci-Fi

I played in and ran an Amber campaign that lasted about three years, and Zelazny is my favourite author. (2nd favourite: Steven Brust). I'd be more excited about this news if it were likely I'd ever see it... being in Australia can be a drag.

Me too. I enjoyed it plenty! Amber was the first fantasy series I discovered for myself and I really fell into it whole-heartedly as a kid. I had two very successful and long-lived (for me) campaigns of the Amber Diceless RPG in the 90s.

Ah, Nicole... Had I known... But next Gen Con, if I can come again, you'll have to tell me more!

I did not see the series, saw the movie, really enjoyed it, then read the first books, and enjoyed them even more. They're great stuff, you're missing something. I don't know if I would have liked the movie as much if I had read the novels beforehand.

I hope it's more like the X-Men movie (middling hopes, low expectations, awesomely exceeding both) than like the DnD movie (high hopes, low expectations, awesomely plunging lower than either could have gone even in my tired and bitter mind.)

Thankfully it's not a problem for you. I know I love parts of the movie - I think it's got one of the best casts assembled for a film, it's just that the script falls into a big hole in the middle of the film and I perish of boredom. (Exaggerating for dramatic effect, of course!)

Mind you, that's after seeing it too many times, the first couple of times I thought it was better.

Read Dune many times, though. Read Amber Chronicles many times as well, especially when I was playing the game.

The one problem with Amber, as I see it, is that the heart of the book is Corwin's storytelling: him being arrogant, getting it wrong, and eventually growing into a character of immense stature.

This could go horribly wrong in a mini-series.

OTOH, I've now got the LotR film to show me how great works can also be adapted to make great films. And I've read LotR more than Dune & Amber...

I think what happened here is that SciFi got caught with its pants down when LotR and Harry Potter started getting all this popularity. Quick! Quick! Where can we get an epic fantasy story to show NOW!?!?!

I hope the show doesn't get rushed.

I don't know about them getting caught - I think it takes a lot of behind the curtain work. They are doing Farmer's River World this year, Dune last year, so they have been doing something.
