For our overseas friends, (and particularly clueless Americans) Labor Day is the day we honor people who work.

It was instituted during the height of power of the unions, so one might assume that it's especially about blue-collar workers, but to tell the truth it's not so much 'celebrated' anymore as much as it's an excuse for a day off and sales at the mall.

We get so few days off here in the good ol' USA we have to take every one seriously.

Historically, it was passed at a time when unions had a fair amount of power in the United States.

Its timing, however, was designed to defuse the informal celebrations of another "Worker's Holiday," May Day. People didn't want to officially celebrate May Day because of its associations with communism and anarchism.

It is a ridiculous holiday that should be revoked.
Bite thine tongue! ;)

If we could tie Labor Day holiday rights to productivity, I'd be all for that. Half the people in my office would never get a "Labor Day" off, and I'd get 2 or 3 every year. A couple of people in my office would get one every month....

If you don't like it, just go in to work that day for free. Your bosses will love ya for it. :)

In all seriousness, it's never been a holiday designed to "celebrate work"--it's a holiday to celebrate what the unions have brought to the laborers. You know, things like the 40-hour work week and the weekend.

Milwaukee even has a festival to celebrate it called "Labor Fest" (it's free, but I have marvel about the irony of those who have to work at this festival). This blue-collar town takes unions very seriously.

I did, and he does.

I can't touch this with a stick without going into politics.

Labor day is almost holy. It is one of the few days that tight ass penny pinching selfish corporate owners let their employees enjoy their life. Two weeks vacation a year and I can't retire until I am 70.

Thanks for all the freetime. Tell me socialism does not have at least a few benefits:)

I say you go find the person who put a gun to your head and made you choose your field and profession, and give them a piece of your mind.

I like my job, but feel that as the most productive country in the world that the worker has earned more than a few days off a year. No male in my family has lived to seventy years of age and

I find it frustrating that our G (can't use the word on the boards) could better find ways to support the working class instead of the top tier. Both parties cater to the same type of powerful people.

But I do not want to say anymore because it could get too political.

I don't know why you would recommend such a violent solution. I think you should see a shrink

There was no violence in my suggestion, but if you believe in psychology...

Anyway- you could visit nutkinland or Yahoo Group: Closed Threads if you want to talk politics.

Edit- I turned my threats to threads, and am considering sewing a shirt.

Trying to stay out of politics, really I am, here goes.

Part of the reason we are so productive as a country is that the G does not tell private interprise what to do.
