[OT] Where to go in the USA?

First Post
Aloha,

Me and my girl plan on making a long roadtrip through the usa next year. Starting at GENCON we would like to see the nicest places in the states. Can you give us some suggestions for places we would not find in travel guides?

I know this question has nothing to do with roleplaying, but this is the greatest collection of people with similar interests in the states we know :) If you can point us to some great site which has to do with fantasy rpg's the better.

If someone wants to put us up for the night even better, the more money saved on travel expenses the more can go to the buying of books and games :D as there are always things you cant get in europe, or are much cheaper in the us.

I always wanted to go to New Orleans but if you have a better idea, let me know.

Worth the drive...

Head to East Tennessee up in the Smoky Mountains near Knoxville. You can do nothing but tour some spectacular caverns, and make a road trip out of Mammoth Cave in Kentucky.

If nature isn't your bag, make the long haul to the coast and visit Washington, D.C. You can spend an entire week doing nothing but wandering through the various exhibits at the Smithsonian. The Holocaust Museum in D.C. is both gut-wrenching and awe-inspiring.

Of course, what with the U.S. being something like the fourth largest country in the world, these brief suggestions are hardly exhaustive.

I live in St. Louis, but I know enough about Chicago to suggest a thing or two. The Art Institute of Chicago is Chicago's Art museum, but it also hosts an impressive array of medieval hardware (which tend to be huge nasty looking swords) in the basement. Chicago also has a Medieval Times, which is possibly a little cheezy, but somehow very neat at the same time. The one in Orlando Florida's supposed to be better, but Chicago's closer to GENCON. And if you wanna see how far out you can see from your villian's thousand foot tall tower, there's a couple of nice buildings there that would be more than happy to demonstrate.

In St. Louis itself, we have the old Indian mounds on the East side if that interests you at all. A little to the north on the Illinois we have our local monster "The Piasa bird" (stats can be found in GURPS Horror) painted on the bluffs of the Mississippi. Our Art Museum has some Medieval and Renaissance stuff in it, our Zoo has a lot of varmints, and our Science Center has a stuffed Jackalope on display, all for free.

Massachusetts is a good bet too. They got castles, ancient graveyards, and Salem, which is a little touristy, but heck, you're a tourist.

If you are interested in AMerican History (which remember starts in the 1600's)I would suggest a jaunt along the East Coast.

I'd go to Charleston SC, for mint julips and laid back Romantic period feel. Then the Greater DC area, bout a bzillion museums in DC, Williamsburg Va has a great colonial faire, and hey the white house gives tours too! From there I would hit Philly for a day (Liberty Bell) and then off to NYC. New York City is dangerous bu awesome. YOu can do anything you want there but it is expensive and nuts. From there you could go to Providence RI and Boston Mass. All along the way from SC up there are scores of great beaches and resort/vacation towns!

Enjoy!

New york is not really on the route as I went to highschool in Smithtown, LongIsland. So I have been to NYC a few times allready :)

We were thinking more to the south and/or west of the US.

SC: The Tourist Trap State ;)

If you do get to South Carolina, stop at a city called Myrtle Beach... I spent a lot of time there when I was younger, because I have a lot of family there... It's got a GREAT feal... It's nothing authentic or anything, it's just a great place to blow a couple days.

Ahhh, yes. Charleston S.C. I've been there. I remember it well.

The old houses were beautiful. The people were wonderful. The history was fascinating. The gaming was great.

The hurricane sucked.
