Granted, it isn't exactly a secret hideaway, but Yellowstone is always great. Me and my wife have been three times and plan to go many more. We may even retire there in another 30 years.
[OT] Where to go in the USA?

Chicago - good neighborhood bars (not as good as Netherlands) awesome food.
Washington DC. Incredible restaraunts tons of stuff to see.
The finger lakes in NY (west of city, east of Rochester).
New Orleans- New Orleans is a dung hole. BUT its one of the most fun Dung Holes in the known worlds. I say go in the middle of August and learn how to drink in that damn heat. ITs an experieince. and they have 1 or 2 really good places too eat.
Avoid Texas.
San Diego California, my second favorite city in the US.
Don't come down to Florida unless you want to visit the mouse or want to keep driving and head down to the Keys. The Keys are a great place too relax.

It's out of the way, but as a kid I always liked the Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico (I spent 4 years in Carlsbad). Don't know what its like now, but way back when, there was the main cave (like a 2+ mile hike through caverns) and then there were smaller caves you could arrange to go spelunking (sp?) in. The formations in the main cave were something to see. I believe they are supposed to be the longest known formation of caverns in the world.
At evening, the bats would come out (there were seats where you could watch), a dense cloud of bats. One of my goals is to head back there and let my kids see that cave.
If you are not careful though, you can easily spend 3/4 of your vacation in the car driving around the U.S.
It would be better to pick 4 or 5 places you want to go and plan on spending 3 or 4 days in each, trying to aim for 2 days or less of driving time between each one.
If you are going to start out in Indiana, my suggestion would be head south first, maybe take in some sights in Tennessee and Kentucky, then head down to New Orleans if thats where you want to go, and then from there head west through Texas, ending your tour in California. That would take in lots of scenic territory.

Seriously, there is a lot to see and do here.
Although if you get a chance, see the Grand Canyon and hike down it a bit. Its utterly phenominal. I camped down at the bottom and it is an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.

Well, if you're interested in the south and west of the US, I'd recommend the following:
*Mammoth Cave (Kentucky)
*New Orleans, esp the French Quarter. Stay at a B&B in the French Quarter, take a tour of the graveyard where Marie Laveaux is buried, drink some Blackened Voodoo beer, and visit a plantation.
*Grand Canyon. There isn't anything remotely like this anywhere else in the world, so you really shouldn't miss it.
*Chicago Yeah, it's neither south nor west, but the art museum is one of the best in the world, the city has lots of fabulous restaurants, and it's IMHO, the most American of all our big cities. What do I mean by that? It isn't really definable, it's just something about the feel. While you're there, stop at the Museum of Science & Industry for a tour of a real WWII German U-Boat! They even have an enigma machine. It's one of the most fascinating things I've ever seen.

If you do get to South Carolina, stop at a city called Myrtle Beach... I spent a lot of time there when I was younger, because I have a lot of family there... It's got a GREAT feal... It's nothing authentic or anything, it's just a great place to blow a couple days.
HEY! True but HEY! We are also a hot state, summer temps near or above 90 all the way to October. The coast is a wonderful place and the mountains are nice.
See the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas!
