I read about this in New Scientist, I think. Cool looking design and it reminds me of the Beanstalk in the 2300 AD game.

Uh? I don't know about you guys behind the planet, but 1 kwatt of power isn't enough for a house here.

Not peak power, but probably average. Think of the time you're at work or asleep. You're house is saving up those kw-hours for when you're home.

Still seems a bit light to me.

And Australia's the perfect place to put it. Not to sound rude or anything, but Australians have more land area than the US of A, and tend to live in small pockets along the coast... if they're going to leave all that land free, about time someone used it.

Fast forward 100 years... how many of these things will there be, and will Australia look like an international multiplug?
