D&D 5E Out of the Abyss, Your First Session

I'm getting ready to run this next month, and I'm running into some prep troubles.

Namely, how much to prepare for. I know I need to work a bit ahead, just in case, but I have a questions for those that have already started running it. How far did your group get in the first session, and how long was that session?

Thanks in advance!

My table got most of the way out of Velkynvale in the first 2 hour session. Looking back, I should not have let that happen. I'd recommend keeping the first session to PCs getting to know each other, suffering under the drow, and gathering intel & supplies for their escape.

That also gives time to establish all the NPC prisoners. Quite important, since they drive so much of the plot in the first half of OotA. Also gives their deaths impact if things go badly.

I agree. My first session saw the players get offered the escape from the dissatisfied Drow Elite, and ended at the point where they would need to work out what they wanted to do. I feel that even that amount of time was too quick. I would go so far as to say a session and a half of pure prison enjoyment.

Then once everything is established and the players a ready to bust free, let it happen, and let it be fluid. My players made some mistakes on their escape and had to leave other behind, but those tough choices are what make it memorable I think.

I even had a player receive a personal flogging session from the mistress in her chambers, affording him the opportunity to see a chest overflowing with confiscated gear. Not that they were able to reclaim it at the escape. :)

Cool, thanks folks.

I definitely will try to keep things slow with Velkynvelve. I want them to really have a hatred for their drow captors, so that fits perfectly with my plans.
