Outside of Eberron, is the Artificer still useful?

Ok, in a "standard" style D&D game (no lightning rails or warforged), is the artificer still as useful? Is it still worth playing? What could be done to make it more useful in a more traditional D&D game?

From all of the posts I've read from people who have played one, it seems that being able to heal warforged is the sort of ability that makes an artificer a must, or at least very nice to have, in an Eberron campaign.

Without a warforged, it still seems to be a very useful and fun class. I don't think you need to modify it to make it useful in other campaign worlds.

Well, warforged still get half benefit from regular healing spells, and if they're a class with innate healing abilities (paladin or monk), those work as well. There is a feat they can take, however, that makes them totally immune to healing spells as a side effect, and the same effect can be had by taking the warforged juggernaut PrC.

Sure. But most people who play with a warforged in the group tend to express that an artificer is a very good idea.
