Over the top?

Cedric

First Post
Well...I've finished my "Crowning Achievement" or rather, my character Cedric has.

Cedric is a High Priest of Boccob. 1 level Wizard, 7 levels Cleric, and now 10 levels Master of True Iron (homebrew Artificer prestige class)...18th Character Level

Having completed sufficient experience to achieve the 10th level in the Prestige class, in order to qualify for the title, Master of True Iron and be a lifetime member of this small society, I had to complete a magic item worthy of a Master of True Iron...basically something bordering on Artifact level.

I spent almost 10 years game time studying with Ancient Dragons of different colors. Bargaining my skills as an artificer for a chance to learn and study with them.

In the end, with their help, I created:

The Crown of Dragons - +6 int; +6 wis; +30 Knowledge: Arcana; +30 Spellcraft; Ability to telepathically communicate with all dragons within 1 mile; Will Save DC 30 when first putting on crown or affected by Feeblemind. Languages: Elven, Draconic, Celestial, Infernal, Abyssal, Undercommon, Common. Read Magic and read all languages. 22 int, 19 wis, 17 cha. Detect secret doors (will), find traps (will), intuit direction (10 ranks), sense motive (10 ranks). Claraudience/Clairvoyance (100ft range/1 minute per use) 3/day, Detect Thoughts (100ft range/1 minute per use) 3/day, Telepathy (100ft range) 2/day, True Seeing at will. Special Purpose - Defend servants and interests of Boccob. +2 luck bonus on all saving throws, +2 deflection AC bonus, Spell Resistance 15. Ego: 31

It cost me tons of gold and xp to make, as I'm sure you can imagine. The base abilities I put into it by choice, but the intelligent abilities were rolled randomly, although I do get a small bonus to altering the percentages rolled for intelligent item abilities - as part of the artificer class.

I'm very proud of how it turned it, it's the culmination of a few years roleplaying time and considerable effort in and out of game.

I'm curious if people think it's over the top though. Too powerful?

Would you allow this if someone invested that much time and effort into making it?

Keep in mind this is a game of 18th character level characters that are on their way to epic play.

I'd be interested in some opinions.

not bad, not bad, in fact i like it very much how you have it so that only powerful characters can use it, but 1 question, do you have to make the will save the first time you put it on or every time you put it on? but very nice, i might use it in my campaign.

First time only Will Save...basically your brain has to make a system shock to handle that big of a change that quickly without just burning out.

As a note, if you fail, you can never use the item.

Even if the Feeblemind ability is cured, the Crown will forever reject you, causing you to be struck with Feeblemind again if you put it back on.

Heh, I posted them there about 3-4 server moves ago...maybe 2 years ago.

Probably no chance of finding that post, so I'll post it again.

First off -- I have not had experience with 3 at those high levels yet so I can not say directly.

However, the Will DC 30 to wear/use it alone seems like a good way to make sure it stays in high powered circles.

A couple abilities confused me though (only from lack of explaination more so than anything else).

"Languages: Elven, Draconic, Celestial, Infernal, Abyssal, Undercommon, Common"

Is that languages granted to the wearer while worn? If so, why did you choose those languages? This all seems very dragon-based so the planar/alignment languages seem extra (only need draconic, really, perhaps?)

"Read Magic and read all languages"

You've already got such a good baseline of languages taken care of, above. Not to mention at will abilities. Why not just can use read magic and tongues at will. (Though, I guess that would make the language knowledge subject to anti-magic which may not be desireable.)

That's just some rambles.

Over all though, it does seem pretty nice and if your goal was near-artifact status, it appears that you have well gotten there.

The languages are the languages spoken by the Crown, which is an intelligent item.

As a benefit of the fact that I achieved a result of 100 for determination of it's stats, languages, abilities and means of communication...it can read all languages and read magic, per the intelligent item creation rules and speaks the languages I decided would be most appropriate, I had 6 to choose from + common.

No problem. There are some interesting (and I think balanced) feats that we added, specific to this character class.

While they were intended to be "for this class", I would probably allow them in one of my games for item creation oriented characters.

They would just need some pre-requisites assigned to them...right now they are part of the class.
