Over the top?

I see no negatives

That is my only complaint.

In my opinion there should be continuing negatives to using this item. I remember the DMG 1E and all the artifacts listed in there. Each one had some sort of curse or major downside to its continued use.

I've considered adding drawbacks to the continued use of this item.

In the end, I decided against it though. A number of the 3rd edition artifacts do not have a drawback...and in truth, this isn't an artifact. It's just very close to one.

Been lurking here for awhile, but wanted to say, that's a cool magic item. You must have a monstrous will save if you built that limitation into the crown though. Either that or you like to gamble.

Ahh, personality for the crown wound up being..."full of itself, but cooperative"

With that high of an ego, that high of intelligence, it has to have a superiority complex...it even says something similar to that in the book.

Being the creator of it though, I'm hoping we'll get along fairly well. Kind of the ..."I brought you into this world, I can take you out" sort of thought.

I like it. The skill bonuses are high, but thats not the fault of the artifacts design, but rather 3e ruleset (+30 being the maximum non-epic skill bonus items can grant, right?). Or actually why not, since this is supposed to be near-artifact-powerful.

It's always nice if players can somehow leave their mark on the campaign world. I hope though that your characters adventures or achievements don't end here..

I'd considered that when the character does become "epic" I would like to be able to use some of the epic skills for magic item identification, etc.

This was NOT going to happen without some serious boost to those skills though. This was part of my insipiration for the Crown of Dragons.

That and the fact that it always irritated me that a Dragon could have a +50 something or higher in knowledge arcana or spellcraft, while as a Human I could never hope to achieve that high of a total....no matter how much I studied.

I have created a few other, more minor items in the game world too though.

Boccob's Vesments of the Librarian

Basically a black vest made out of phase spider silk and displacer beast hide. Gives a +10 competence bonus to move silently and hide in shadows skill checks.

Basically a black vest made out of phase spider silk and displacer beast hide.

Now, in 3e, specifically they don't require you to use special items...like you don't need to use snake venom to make potions of neutralize poison.

Now, yes I know that these items are what go into the "cost" to make a magic item, but still, you don't have to go out and collect stuff like the phase spider silk or displacer beast hide.

So I was wondering why you specify those materials in the creation?

We use a house rule where you get discounts for creating an item, if you've collected very appropriate components.

Like using red dragon scales to make garments that are fire resistant, etc.

Kind of hard to say what the discounts are, we just play it by ear.
