D&D (2024) Overthinking Long Rest in 2024

. . . There’s plenty of them around (I’m in Seattle this week) and they are well frequented. There’s definitely a set of folks more loyal to local chains like Ladro, Herkimer - those who reject “Big Coffee”.
I miss Seattle. Go to Ladro for organic coffee. Look for Zoka or Vivace for coffee that makes Starbucks feel like a visit to Walmart. Also, do let me know if things have changed :(
1980s. Reaches NZ. Flat White is invented in Wellington NZ (via a mistake) or Australia.
Early 2000s Starbucks sends staff to Australia iirc. Flat White reaches USA.

Think that's the pop culture version.
Ah. So it was the New Zealanders who were the first Goldilocks of milky coffee?

I live in Seattle. Everyone SAYS they don't drink Starbucks and that they drink local coffee houses only, but every star bucks DriveThru is constantly full, so either those drivethrus are filled with tourists or everyone is a liar.
This does not hold for all definitions of "everyone." Maybe you're thinking of Hollywood?

Also, why is this thread about coffee and not long rests?
Because coffee is way more interesting. However, I'd like to note (after having skipped most of the thread) that the 6e version of "long rest" ignores the magical properties of a turn of the world. The sunrise isn't just a spin on an axis - it's the arrival of the sun god, and the temporary defeat of the god of darkness. Tell a druid that dawn and dusk are just questions of who has to start using infravision. You'll get a branch in the face.

It's one of those NZ vs Australia debates over who invented what. See Pavlova, ANZAC biscuits and Russel Crowe.

Lived there 2014-2019. Don’t forget the Fosters equivalent: “Seattle’s Best Coffee” - errr..no….

You are 1000% correct on the Fosters. 🤢 (Caution: subjectivity) More complex on the Starbucks side. There’s plenty of them around (I’m in Seattle this week) and they are well frequented. Makes sense. Speaking of Seattle, I could use some Piroshky Piroshky, but I'm in east Tennessee. Blah.

You sleep for at least 6 hours.. After you finish a Long Rest, you must wait at least 16 hours before starting another one.
6 hours plus 16 hours is 22, not 24. If you went to sleep at midnight last night, you can go to sleep at 10 PM tonight. It makes a fair amount of sense to me.

The system will always have weird edge cases because it's trying to bucket the immense complexity of fatigue, sleep, and recovery into "Short Rest" and "Long Rest." But the new rule is straightforward in application as well as theory ("no more than one every 24 hours" sounds simple but raises all sorts of questions about when a new 24-hour period starts), and it should handle the vast majority of situations just fine. That's the sweet spot for D&D rules. The edge cases can be left up to the DM.

It's also a tabloid btw.

Better than NZ herald.
"In Australia, though, despite consumers being faced with the same “overwhelming” conditions, business has boomed. For the first time in its two-decade history of operating Down Under, Starbucks reported a profit last year, with revenue rising to $157.3 million."

First profit last year lol.

Buying American coffee (or chocolate) is like going to New Zealand for an enlightened cultural experience.
