Painting "tricks"

I recently "restarted" painting minis and was wondering if people had suggestions or "tricks" for painting minis (or good resources to go to look for suggestions). Mainly I'm talking about shadowing and other ways to make the minis look more "realistic" than simply putting the paint on and keeping it "in between the lines."
