Pathfinder 1E Paizo Annoucement!

I'm a bit disappointed by this move. I really liked Paizos work on Dragon and Dungeon, but I'm too excited for 4E and my problems with 3E can not be fixed with a new paint job.
Let's hope they decide to support 4E next year, although i guess it will be hard for them to explain their fanbase why they should suddenly like 4E, since a large part of their fans seem to be die-hard 4E haters...
Hmm, maybe now some of the 4E haters here will spend more time on the Paizo boards... that way we could all profit from this announcement. :D

Really? That would be impressive.

Do you think this migration away from 4e will be reflected on this very forum?

Nope. I think the people who would rather not migrate to 4E have already been driven away from the forum because of all the hostility of the fan boys :P

From my brief skim of the rules, the only thing I don't like is, once again, no skill points -- but I'm "Getting" that I'm the only person on the planet which DID like them.

You're not alone! I love the skill points too and will lobby until the playtest ends for them to add them back in / give characters MORE of them per level. The Fantasy Spycraft thing that was announced a while back might fit the bill, but I heart Paizo products, so this 3.P is exactly what I wanted.

This is pretty silly as well. Half of D&D players probably don't even know who Pazio is.

I said initial sales. Which are generally generated from people who are very involved with RPGs (and are thus likely to know about other products and alternatives).

Long term, the effects will probably be not as bad unless 4E's distribution system collapses and the marketing is outright horrible :P

Interesting

I see two camps here. Those who dislike WoTC, fan boys and girls of 4e and those who just want to play D&D. I saw the same sort of thing during the switch to 3e. Some of the haters switched over to 3e due to the pressure of acceptance of the new rule system, others didn't and still play 2e or more likely another system. The latter is a very small group and I'm going to guess that Paizo isn't banking their future on that.

I say "dislikes WoTC" because I've read the the Pathfinder system and it isn't going to be 3.5. It is going to be a system that Paizo can publish under OGL. If you aren't switching to 4e due to not wanting to convert your campaign, good luck with that under Pathfinder. There will be less of a learning curve in Pathfinder, but you will have to convert.

I'm in the, I just want to play D&D with my friends category. I don't care what system I play so long as we have fun doing it and it is supported. The problem is that history has shown that most everyone will follow the big guys lead, they have the money to do it.

I see a lot of nerd rage here, I can't imagine what it's like on the Pazio boards.

Hm...

Is it possible to be excited for both the Pathfinder RPG and 4e without invoking the apocalypse?

Because, I kind of am...

I'm excited about 4e, I'm hopeful for Paizo. I'm not really sure they had a good business alternative. Which sucks because Wizards could have found some way to share their ball with the other d20 companies to which they owe some of their success.

Now everybody has gone public with their plans, and because Wizards can't lose the face to go begging to Paizo, and Paizo can't lose the face to abandon 3.5p, this is the way it's going to stay... :(

Personally I love the marketing genius.

You get people to pay for Pathfinder Beta then 12 months later pay again for Pathfinder.

And people complained about the gap between the different versions of WotC D&D, but some how by calling it Beta instead of 1.0 and 1.5 they hope Paizo fans won't even notice.

I think you forgot the part where Paizo is making the pdf version of the Beta a free download. Yep, those moneygrabbers don't give printed copies for free, just the pdf! :D

Um, for those reading the alpha set and criticizing it, please understand IT'S A DRAFT!

They are inviting you to comment on it, and even influence changes in it!

Does it to too much? To little? YOU CAN HELP GET IT CHANGED!

So what, is this now the default answer any time any company incorporates a rule someone doesn't like into any RPG rule-set?

Paizo may or may not be making a good business decision and only time will tell. I certainly hope that they based their decision on solid market data and not on some poll on their website. I may title my first published RPG "Snakes on An Airship" if they it turns out they used the latter.

One thing I do find interesting is that Lisa's letter effectively states "Pathfinder is sticking with 3.5 because it's the best system!!" and not "Pathfinder will start switching to 4E when we start a new Adventure Path and have a copy of the GSL and the rules." There's a bit of a difference there, in that the first is a bit more hostile to 4E than the other.

It's perfectly possible. (I'm kind of interested in it, especially in what they're doing with grapple & the like.)

Of course, it does mean you'll be tarred, feathered, burned in effigy, and ran out of town by two crazed pitchfork-and-torch mobs. ;)
