Pathfinder 1E Paizo Annoucement!

Barbarians are coming in the next alpha. Says so in the file.

I do.

In general tone, if not always in specific detail, Pathfinder is what I wanted from 4e -- fixes without redefining the game or rendering old material wholly unusable. With a year of development to do, many of the specific issues you mention can be dealt with. The use of an open beta is extremely heartwarming; instead of hearing about the game after 3 years of closed development and being told "Here's what it is, like it or lump it", Paizo is willing to listen to the playerbase and incorporate feedback from a wide variety of sources. I think this will lead to a better game.

Have to agree with lizard there on what he quoted. i care about stuff like that as well. I have not read the alpha rules yet but I am with you Lizard I like skill points but I do think they needed a total face lift.

Does anyone have a mirror to the Pathfinder Alpha rules? Paizo's site is spinning its wheels and I can't get to the download page... :\

http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG

That is the URL to the page, near the bottom is a link that will take you to the store where you can DL the rules. You have to make a account first but that only takes a couple of mins.

So from this announcement, it is safe to assume they roundly ignored testing the new 4E rules and ignored proper due diligence to come to such conclusions?

Hmm. Well, I guess it makes sense to continue with 3.5 and then change their minds later on so they don't have to cease production.

This isn't about rules and never has been. It's about what the GSL will allow them to publish. Will the GSL allow them to keep elements of the pathfinder setting they have created? Can they keep bards? half orcs and other 3.5 material? Nobody knows because the only people who have the GSL are HASBRO's legal team and they are sitting on it. My suspicion is they are burying it, based on how long they have had it.

Paizo's hand was forced. Erik has already stated his preference was to go with 4E but in the end a lack of GSL left them with no other realistic choice.

I say good luck to them. I am currently running Rise of the Rune Lords and have previously run the savage tide adventure path. Paizo do good work and will continue to get my $.

Paizo -- Great Products, Just Not What I'm Spending My $$ on Anymore

I love the Paiso products. I am a charter subscriber. I don't play their AP, because I have a long running campaign in the FR. However, I've enjoyed reading them and pillaging them for ideas, characters, magic items, and monsters.

I've already decided to shift to 4E. Therefore, I've stopped buying any 3E/3.5E products except Paizo. The only reason I kept buying theirs was to support the company until they transitioned to 4E.

Sorry, can't afford to do that for another year.

Like many others, I wish them well, and I'm sorry the GSL delay caused them to have to make alternate plans. At least now I know how I'm paying for all the 4E stuff I ordered from Amazon.

-lack of combat options at low levels.
-too-complicated combat at high levels.
-bloated stat blocks for NPCs/Monsters.
-dependence on multiple stat-boosting magic items.

Check the first one at least-- casters get at will attacks starting at level 1, and lots of extra spells /day based on level begining at level 2.

I think that some people are forgetting that ENWorld is only a small percentage of the D&D demographic and in the big picture, just how many out of millions of D&D players (so claims WOTC) will opt to not go to 4E. That is Paizo's potential market and I think it may be a sufficiently large enough one, if Paizo can get the word out and can tap into it.

I think their strategy will work and they have left themselves the option to start a new line that supports 4e in the future. Afterall, they announced that Pathfinder will not go to 4e and that doesn't mean Paizo as a whole has locked themselves to living or dying with 3.x, just the Pathfinder line.

I, for one, will continue to support Pathfinder. I like engaging stories first and systems to tell that story second so I expect that I will be playing both 3.x and 4e depending of what stories I want to tell.

All the best to Erik and the gang. Qa'pla!

I was reading the paizo alpha stuff, it's more like a 3.99 version.
I wonder what the anti-4e players with their tons of 3.5 material will think of that...

How much can they tweak 3.5 until it's just like 4E?

I hope that WOTC hounds are looking Paizo closely.

EDIT: OMG the elf in the races chapter is so anime!

If I may ask, what about this has prompted your sudden anti Paizo campaign? Its not like they kicked your puppy on the way out.

I think its rather crass and lowbrow of you to wish failure upon a company manned by people who, regardless of what direction they may take for their business, have proved themselves to write with a genuine love for the game and have produced incredible quality material because of it.

They are inviting you to comment on it, and even influence changes in it!

Does it to too much? To little? YOU CAN HELP GET IT CHANGED!

And if the problems are deep fundamental math and magic issues they'd have to create a new underlying system to fix?
