Pathfinder 1E Paizo Annoucement!

I was reading the paizo alpha stuff, it's more like a 3.99 version.
I wonder what the anti-4e players with their tons of 3.5 material will think of that...

How much can they tweak 3.5 until it's just like 4E?

I hope that WOTC hounds are looking Paizo closely.

EDIT: OMG the elf in the races chapter is so anime!

I've been looking forward to 4e, but this also looks cool. I also find it amusing that the Pathfinder rules share the same cover artist as 4e. Go WAR!

Um, for those reading the alpha set and criticizing it, please understand IT'S A DRAFT!

They are inviting you to comment on it, and even influence changes in it!

Does it to too much? To little? YOU CAN HELP GET IT CHANGED!

Also, for those upset that there will not be a 4E adventure path, you really, REALLY should keep an eye on Necromancer Games (published through Paizo). Clark is about as geeked as one can be about the series of adventures he's got planned.

This REALLY is the best of both worlds in that both 3.5 AND 4E fans can have something to look forward to.

*Win!*

Barbarians get... wait what? No barbarians? So, the cleric gets like 6x more healing, and the barbarians get nothing? Same for ranger, druid, monk, bard...

Barbarians are coming in the next alpha. Says so in the file.

Do we really need taste/touch/smell modifiers codified? Does ANYBODY actually care what the DC is of tracking 4 people when it snowed yesterday? Or the DC of seeing someone 200 feet away?

I do.

In general tone, if not always in specific detail, Pathfinder is what I wanted from 4e -- fixes without redefining the game or rendering old material wholly unusable. With a year of development to do, many of the specific issues you mention can be dealt with. The use of an open beta is extremely heartwarming; instead of hearing about the game after 3 years of closed development and being told "Here's what it is, like it or lump it", Paizo is willing to listen to the playerbase and incorporate feedback from a wide variety of sources. I think this will lead to a better game.

Well, for the record, I had been intrigued by Paizo's products. On the other hand, I couldn't care less now.

It really comes down to a simple question.

Are the Paizo and Pathfinder brands sufficiently valuable to overcome people's attachment to the brand name Dungeons & Dragons?

For longtime Paizo fans still smarting over the perceived mishandling of Dragon and Dungeon, maybe. For most people, no way. It's a gutsy move on Paizo's part, but it just opened up a huge gap in the Fourth Edition product line for an enterprising company.

The question is, how much of a market will there be for non-4E products? Paradigm, Paizo, and maybe Green Ronin have their eyes on it. They may drive each other out of business.

I'd like to remind everyone that what we've released is the Alpha playtest. We welcome your concerns and playtest feedback on our Alpha boards as we'll be looking to them as a barometer for how right or wrong our changes sit with the gaming community at large.

We know that our decision isn't, unfortunately, for everyone. We feel that its currently the best decision for our business.

I have to agree with DaveMage, this is full of win. For groups who don't want to leave 3.5e, I'd use these Pathfinder rules. I also plan to pick up 4e for those willing to make the switch. I'll have two good systems with plenty of players. This is awesome.

For those concerned about my criticisms, please understand that I'm making critiques of a draft. You know, that's what I'm supposed to do. And I am.

I criticized 4e's prerelease stuff. That criticism had an effect, I think. Now I shall do the same here. Because I'd like Paizo to succeed, but in my opinion, this isn't going to do it. Paizo doesn't have the luxury of sitting around with a failed alpha (like something that rhymes with Schleemax). They need to get out the gate running, and this is not it.
