Pathfinder 1E Paizo Announces More Details about Minis Line

Vry interesting. It sometimes seems as if Paizo is aiming to become WotC anno 2005 or something like that. I have no qualms with this, but it seems a bit unimaginative as a business plan.

The black dragon looks cool. And I like the troll. The prices are a bit high, but I've paid more for individual minis I wanted so I'll look into this.

The only problem is those have been out for years, and there's only 39 of em. Paizo beats that in its first release, and swamps it 6 months later. LE has the drawback of non-random pre-painted - highish prices and little to no variety. Random PPM lets you actually have stuff other than level 1-3 grunt minions (orcs, goblins skeletons, zombies, rats).

I buy a ton of reaper metals (I have more unpainted than I would ever admit to my wife!) but their PPM's just aren't doing it for me.

And really I cant complain about the Paizo prices. 6 dollars for a giant is pretty decent, when you're probably paying 15+ for an unpainted metal. And you don't even want to know what some premium medium minis are going for now.

Whew! I was worried we'd go four or five posts without someone trying to start a company battle (i.e. thinly veiled edition war).

I do appreciate how they spelled put the why's and wherefore's. THAT'S what makes Paizo such a great company: communication with customers.

So only the anti-WotC people are allowed to be smart alecs? You have to admit there's a few of the people who derided DDM VERY heavily that have suddenly changed face since it's Paizo putting them out.

Now that I see the dragon, it's pretty bad too. I like the Venomous Shadow Dragon more, which appears to be what it was patterned after.

That won't stop me from scratching the itch a little though as two of the ones I see so far are good enough to take some chances on and it's a good price point.

I guess I'm not as much of a Paizo fanboi as some might have otherwise thought, because:

bleah.

No thank you on the random minis.

No. Thank. You.

They explain why they needed to do random on the Q&A page.

though with that said, they also say WizKids has plans to also release non-random encounter packs later.
Reading over that Q&A again I realized they were addressing the random vs individual mini release, not the random vs non-random encounter pack.

Is random that much of a better seller than the encounter pack model?

Either way, I'm glad to see Paizo picking up where WotC left off, keeping my fingers crossed for them in the minis market. I guess I have a weak spot in my heart for Paizo; whenever they take a risk like this I'm always rooting for them.

If ever my idealized "Campaign in a Box" were to be realized, something tells me it's the folks at Paizo who would do it.

Speaking as someone who doesn't use or have a desire to use minis...

I wonder how viable it is to make minis for a tabletop RPG, by and large. A few companies (WizKids, Reaper) tend to do OK in the minis market, but largely market to a board game and a higher-end collectors market respectively, if I grok correctly. The "middle road" doesn't seem to please many folks, however you slice the demographic. Too random and mass-produced for the collectors, too expensive and without an instant game for the board gamers.

I get that folks love their plastic an' all, but the minis market seems...unusually tough for RPGs, regardless of the price of oil. There's been many more failures than successes, from really big brand names, and you'd think that our little corner of the market could support more than two or three companies.

Randomized is a bad call, since that could be the poison pill that kills the whole thing, but I do get from their website that it was a necessary call, which makes me think that the only possible plan they could have gone with was destined for failure because of the limits on it.

Well, maybe the WizKids thing will help offset it?

Anyway, this is coming from an outsider. I'm just fascinated that, given how many folks seem to want minis, how hard it is for any company to actually make a profit off of the things.

The same reaction Paizo is getting from me, I am not buying.

Yeah, it's too pricy for what they are. It's too bad because I would like the pre painted miniature market to return.

Ah well, I hope WOTC will take another chance on the minis market. I miss em. :.-(

Well, they are pricey, but I'll wait to see what more of them look like. Not too impressed with the ones shown thus far, especially if they are supposed to be a good representation of the set.

Second question for me, as always, is will I be able to get them in Japan.

I do not know the answer to that yet. No sign of them on either Amazon USA or Amazon Japan.

I will wait and see.
