Pathfinder 2E Paizo drops use of the word phylactery

I'd argue a cheesy 80s fantasy movie has plenty of character, and might be just right for many campaigns!
I'm not going to lie to you, Blue Orange, you made it sound cool.

By saying it's like something you'd hear in a cheesy 80's fantasy movie, aren't you actually giving it character? :p
Sure. It's just not a flavor I typically want in my D&D games unless I was specifically trying to conjure that 80s cheesy fantasy movie feel.

I understand the reason for dropping the word phylactery, but I don't agree with their replacement at all. Soul Cages literally cage souls in D&D. There is a 5e spell, Soul Cage. In Iron Kingdoms RPG there are magical items used by necromancers, Soul Cages, that capture stray or wayward souls for storage and sacrifice.

Needless to say, I won't be using the new terminology.

I'm not up to date on how to be woke but you have a lich, the baddest ass and coolest monster in D&D which keeps a bit of its soul hidden away in an object with a name nobody can say. Someone looking to prove how racist D&D is researched and found that you translate that nameto the Jewish language, it would be like a real world item used for prayers. So despite nobody in the history of the game ever associating it, now it must be associated and now we must say anyone using that name is Anti Semetic. Because D&D worlds are real places and so anything you design in the game reflects upon you as a person in real life.

Twitter is on fire with people congratulating each other on how woke they are agreeing it was so bad to be in the game, and how WOTC dropped the ball again not finding this piece of anti-semitism.

I feel all this is just to distract from Piazos recent controversy...

While I don't always agree with some changes or the reasons behind them, and in this particular case I don't really care strongly about the change beyond thinking soul cage is a lame name, I actually think it's a good thing that many people are actually concerned about what we choose to call things in our games. Overall it's a good thing to strive to be respectful to other people.

Yeah, absolutely. It's a minor thing, but worth doing. Too bad the initial replacement is not evocative.

Mod Note:
Ooh. Not a good look for your first post, minutes after joining the boards. You should probably go and review the site's Terms and Rules before commenting again on such subjects. Please pay special attention to our inclusivity policy.

Specifically - if you use the term "woke" in a dismissive tone, moderators are likely going to remove you from discussions... like I am right now.

I'm more tepid on this name change than the Race to Ancestry change and Paladin to Champion. Race is a very loaded word so retiring it makes sense. Paladins being a sub-set of Champions future-proofed the entire class for all alignments/codes of conduct rather than baking in the LG aspects first and then overriding them later. I wasn't ever aware of people calling jewish people undead mages (if that's what was happening), so this wasn't a visible issue for me until the announcement, and instead of being replaced with an equally cool sounding or esoteric word they now go by the much more mundane "soul cage." I get that's what they do, cage a soul, but the name's rather plain.
