Pathfinder 1E Paizo no longer publishing Dungeon and Dragon

What does one have to do with the other?

As far as 'betrayal', no. I've expressed myself a few times here. This is the world of business. Do I think it's 'smart' business? No. I do think that this is terrible news but it's hardly the worst thing to even happen today. Well, to most people.

I really hope that we don't hear about some gamers killing themselves over the cancellation of these two magazines, but some of the posts here have me wondering...

Joe,

I tried committing sucidice over a woman. Doing it over a magazine would be MUCH sillier.

But doesn't mean I might not try taking out Renton WA... ;) It's the worst thing to happen to me today considering I was already watching/listening to talks about Dafur. At least there, I felt I could do something.

Ranger man,

Paddling, trucking, it's better than dying off or being covered in honey, buried to your neck and letting fire ants eat you/attack you. ;)

Man, maybe it's just me, but with what's recently happened at the old college, I find that in extremely bad taste, smiley or no.

Joe,

I live near VA Tech. Trust me, I'm not about bad taste, merely upsetness. I'd figure a cynic like you wouldn't care. I'm sorry if you do but honestly, let's be real and move on. It happened, let's not dwell on it more than necessary.

As opposed to Dragon and Dungeon, you know, important things being cancelled? :\

Aw man! Core Beilefs and Demonomicon are unfinished! No more bonus OotS or Nodwick or Dork Tower! No more Zogonia or Mt. Zogon! It's starting to sink in, this sucks worse than I originally thought! Hulk smash!!

I think this move by WOTC was inevitable, once WOTC started publishing more and more adventures themselves.

I mean, one of the things that have hurt 3rd party publishers who did adventures was having to compete with Dungeon magazine. Why pay $12 for a 32 page module, when you get get 2-3 adventures in Dungeon for $6 or so. "Official" adventures, no less.

But they were also competing with WOTC themselves. For much of the time, WOTC didn't care, because they weren't publishing adventures, or if they did, it was infrequent. But now they seem to be getting into it more (since they've largely run out of ideas for splatbooks, I guess), both the larger books, and smaller, insanely priced ones ($20 for 64 pages?). And so Dungeon had to go.

I agree with this, as I noted above. I also tend to think - kind of perversely perhaps, that the adventure path's success may have had a small contribution as well.

My point: Dungeon has been around a long time folks. It's not like TSR didn't have to compete with it when it was in the business of selling adventures too.

But did Dungeon *really* compete with standalone adventures, back in the day? In the sense that you bought Dungeon and didn't buy anything else?

I don't think so. One offs here and there being used in the magazine in home brews are a threat to nobody's sales - and never were.

But Adventure paths people are playing? And for a long protracted period of time? To the exclusion of all else for a year or two?

That hurts sales on other products that are not being purchased as a consequence. It's probably not a huge deal - but it might be measurable. It's a good enough reason to say "no" to AP hardcovers, I expect.

Oh well. I'm in for Pathfinder. ;)

I don't know about that. I have my Dungeon #1 still sitting proudly on the shelf.

The pictures of wife #1 are in a box in the attic.

All a matter of perspective.
