Pathfinder 1E Paizo releases new Estes Greyhawk novel

So, I'm dying to know. What makes these novels so bad?

Is it like that old module with the men that are not tarrying or running, and not talking or shouting? Or is it just a lousy take on Greyhawk?

I didn't read more than a couple of chapters in the first Estes Greyhawk novel, and merely skimmed the rest (I'd bought a couple of them before having read any of them- fortunately they were used and cheap).

The thing that most struck me was the main character- Tam, I think?- mentioning in the first couple of paragraphs that he was a 5th level wizard. That's not an exact quote, but he does say something to the effect of having attained the 5th level of ability as a magic-user. After that, I was pretty much just right out of the book, and couldn't be bothered to keep going for long.

There were some bad comedic moments later on in that same novel, IIRC, that were horribly out of place.

Mika. Tam was his wolf.

Mika polymorphs into a wolf at some stage using his 5th level wizardry, IIRC. Referring to levels was something that the D&D movie did too, incidentally. I'm hoping that the threat of a sequel to the D&D movie hasn't materialised - at least, not by the same writer/director.

The D&D sequel has been out for a year or so now, IIRC. Different writer/director, direct to video, much better reviews. (Although I think everything got better reviews than the first D&D movie.)

And someone needs to bring back Choose Your Own Adventure/Fighting Fantasy/Endless Quest type books. The FF revival seems to have sputtered out, just as I'm about to have a kid who's gonna need those things!

Ah- see, what little I remember of the books has become horribly mashed together. Or else maybe the wolf was just more memorable than the main character.

Rose Estes = Courtney Solomon? :]

I actually have a great fondess for the first four of those novels, they were my first real exposure to D&D, other than maybe the cartoon. I loved "Choose-Your-Own-Adventure" Books, and really loved Dungeon of Dread and Pillars of Pentegarn.

Anyone who was above the age of 8 and/or actually playing D&D before that may have different ideas.

Count me in as another whose first exposure to Greyhawk was through those books. Heck, I never even realized that they were SET in Greyhawk. Granted I was like 10 when I read them. Didn't think they were too bad for choose your own adventure books.

They have. Check DTRPG in the sister site of Fantasy Books.
