Paladin Divine Challenge Query

Does Divine challenge count as an interrupt or a reaction?

We had a situation where the Paladin had divine challenged the bad guy who was very low on hit points at the time. The bad guy hit someone other than the paladin (I can't remember why ) to trigger the damage from the divine Challenge. The damage from the divine challenge killed the bad guy.

We were not sure whether his attack on the other PC would have actually happened in that example.

We figure on treating it like the Fighter Mark, which specifies it's an interrupt. Would this be correct?

It is neither. The damage simply occurs when the foe triggers the Mark by making an attack and does not use the Paladin's immediate action for that round.

I believe the damage is resolved after the attack roll, but before the damage roll.

Thanks for the reply...

How would that work then if the damage from the mark killed the bad guy - would he still do damage to the PC (assuming he hit)?

Since the damage is triggered by the action of making an attack on the other character, and not the damage, the damage never occurs.
