D&D 5E Paladin divine smithe, non magical weapons and damage immunities

I ruled that his first attack was completely flubbed because the blade bounced off the thing. However on subsequent attacks he was able to shift his focus and time the smite appropriately. The player was ok with this.

He used a spell called burning smite (I think?) to put the golem on fire. Flesh golems being very vulnerable to fire, this turned the tide in the PC's favor. Monk took 21 points of damage in a round though.
