Paladin Lay-on Ability

OK, this is probably too simple. In fact, I think I already know the answer, but here goes...

The Paladin has the ability to heal damage = his level x his charisma bonus.

The PC in question is a Pal7/Sor4/Spellsword4, with CHA 20 (+5).
Can he lay-on hands for 35 pts/day (7 x 5), or 75 (15 x 5)?

The class description says CHA bonus x Character Level, but for other abilities (like clerical casting), it says "Paladin Level /2" or "Paladin Level - 2" (Turning).

Please give me your opinions, and reasoning.

Each day she can cure a total number of hit points equal to her Charisma bonus (if any) times her level.
Whenever it says "level" in a class description, or a spell description, it means "class level" or "caster level" respectively.

Therefore,

7 (Paladin level) * 5 (Charisma bonus) = 35.

That's the way we've BEEN playing it. However, I keep getting tripped up by the other references within the Class Description that specify "Paladin Level" instead of "Character Level".

Being something of a literalist (words MEAN things, after all), this has started setting off alarms. Especially since 3E seems to have been set up with multi-classing in mind, unlike 1E/2E.

Also, I KNOW this is going to come up soon; the party is getting into some pretty nasty fights, and are starting to scramble for every ounce of healing they can get...:D

The designers of 3E are much sloppier in their wording than you might hope.

Look at the monk's perfect self ability.

Look at magic missiles reference to "experience levels".

Try to figure out if you can cast fireball in timestop.

Determine whether a shield is armor.

Boggle at the how the monks "ability to run" is supernatural after 9th level. (No, not the monk's higher base speed, the monk's ability to take the run full-round action.)

I have both a 1st and 2nd printing of the PHB (actually the 2nd is my wife's), and the SRD online. All say "level", not "character level" or "class level". Are you using a non-english version?

For the generic "level", I think that "class level" is most appropriate, since that would be more consistent with the abilities of other classes.

Indirectly - all prestige classes with lay on hands say they stack with "paladin levels" for determining total level of lay on hands. It's class level... all those types of abilities are. Like everyone else said - they really weren't as careful as they should have been when talking about character levels versus class levels.

Hope this clears things up a bit.

From the SRD

Lay on Hands: Each day a paladin can cure a total number of hit points equal to the paladin's Charisma bonus (if any) times the paladin's level.

Epic Handbook

In the epic handbook, under epic paladin, it is written as so:

"Lay on Hands: Each day a paladin can cure a total number of hit points equal to her Charisma bonus (if any) times her class level, as normal. "
