Paladin: Lay on Hands

Celtavian

Dragon Lord
Can the Paladin target himself with Lay on Hands?

The Paladin seems like the most durable class in the game, specifically the dwarf paladin. I was able to fight mobs much higher level than myself using Lay On Hands, Second Wind as a minor action dwarf ability, and Bolsterinig Strike.

Is it intended for the Paladin to be able to use Lay on Hands on himself. The guy DMing hadn't read anything to the contrary. So can a paladin really healing surge himself a number of times per day equal to his wisdom modifier?

Now this might work differently in a group as you will have to spend some healing surges on your friends to keep them alive. But in one on one combat, this seems like a real advantage to be able to keep yourself alive so long.

Is this how it runs?

*giggle*

yes

*snicker*

he can

I can understand the laughing. I'm a lvl 1 dwarf paladin. I killed a lvl 5 Gnoll Archer and a lvl 5 Bugbear Brute in single combat. I had to spend an encounter against the gnoll and a daily against the Brute, but I won.

My friend plays a fighter and he got it handed to him by both of the above creatures. I wonder how many lvl 1 characters can take the above one on one. I had such a huge hit point reserve that I could withstand the assault.

I gotta say. It makes me love my paladin even more.

I have to say thanks again to the designer of the 4E Paladin. It is a class worthy of being called a holy warrior.

No, not really, D&D is based around a party mechanic, not solo.
Also monsters have weaknesses, if the paladin was fighting against a ref based artillery monster you'd probably have a bit more trouble on your hands, while a bow ranger would be sorted.
Also note that you are meant to be fighting monsters of 1-3 levels higher than you anyway, at least as a group you are.
To stop being flippant i think that the dwarf paladin is an extremely durable character, and lay on hands can be activated as a standard action on one creature, the paladin is very strong against brutes and soldiers.
In different circumstances a rogue continually hiding and sneak attacking may be better, or maybe an elven bow ranger who has the legs on the bad guy.

What exactly do you mean? Hit points mean life. If you can't keep hit points, you can't keep life.

At low level, a standard action for a healing surge is huge. You may take as much damage from the attack as you do for the healing surge.

Where are you getting that Lay on Hands is a standard action? It is a minor action. You must have misread something. It says minor action on the ability.

If there is a rule I'm missing, please inform.
