ENBoarders have been searching for a 'empowering' Paladin PrC for years now, and none of them have passed muster (for me at least, and many others).

I'm still waiting.

I think there is some serious underrating of the holy sword spell going on here.

Agreed. I saw several paladins in play... and none of them was underpowered, as I thought after first look at the PHB. Not even the ones without Divine Might.

I'm not sure what is meant by an "empowering" Paladin PrC. Of course, a Paladin PrC that allows you to advance all your Paladin abilities at the same rate and gain a few more into the bargain would be superior to a straight Paladin. A PrC that focuses on specific Paladin abilities (Smite Evil, for example) and makes a Paladin more effective in those areas would, in my view, require the character to slow or give up advancement in other areas.

Yeah, but so what? There are lots of official Wizard and Cleric PrCs that let the class gain new spell levels every level, being therefore just as good as a normal Wizard/Cleric, plus PrC coolness.

I think I have a solution for this problem, actually, but I'm not yet ready to post Matt's Bad-Ass Paladin.

I personally don't like such classes, but that's just me. I guess I'm a bit of a balance freak. I don't mind extra abilities in a PrC if it is meant to make a usually sub-optimal choice more feasible, but I don't like PrCs that give you everything you would have gotten by remaining in a core class, and add more abilities to boot. As always, YMMV.

actually, i like the idea of having the a ...wositcalled...few different type of paladin classes.
- the first being akin to what we have now, and possibly with the bonuses like monty cooks version (though i don't like the idea of non-lawful good paladins)
- the second being a paladin that loses out on mount, and maybe even remove disease and etc smite, but having the ability to cast up to 6th level spells *like a bard*, though much slower in progression, and possibly access to 1 (maaybe even 2) domains
