Paladin without a Code of Conduct

The idea of a Lawful Good character worshipping an evil god is foolish. For one false devotion to Vecna to "infiltrate" his clergy wouldn't trick Vecna into granting that Paladin powers. And if he was truely devoted to the ideals of Vecna he couldn't be lawful good.

about the lying thing. A paladin would not go around lying to everyone. But when set with circumstances where he has a choice to lie or put the lives of people in danger which do you think he would do? He has to protect innocent and be honest. I would guess they would go with saving people. They do not have to be these sneaky paladins, but they can be smart and have tactics besides charging straight into the enemy stronghold.

:D

A paladin would not lie. They just wouldn't give and answer.

Fib away, if you think it would make the fight against evil better. They're evil. They don't *deserve* the truth. In the same way, being sneaky is okay, as long as you're furthering the cause of good for it.

Yup, that's exactly what the Spanish thought during their Inquisition....

I'm not flaming you, just making you aware that many, many threads in the past have endlessly debated this point.

Zenon is right. Paladins follow the rules. If you faught evil using the same tactics they use how are you good? Paladins have to opperate under a certain set of rules. CG or NG or even CN don't have to opperate under those rules and have more room to manuver you might say.

Couple questions:

1. Is the Paladin character aware of his Code of Conduct, or does he follow it subconciously?

2. Can the Code of Conduct change over time?

1. According to the PHB, paladins "swear to follow a code of conduct that is in line with lawfulness and goodness." So I'd say they're consciously aware of it.

2. That's up to the DM. If the DM thinks it's appropriate for the current campaign, I don't see why not, but it would be a house rule. I could see the code changing for a particular church, if the core beliefs of the church changed. This would probably be due to cosmic events, like the death of a god, and wouldn't happen a lot. (Unless you're in the Forgotten Realms....)
