My players just finished a session. There are three first level characters. One of the characters is a druid and has a wolf animal companion. The wolf has been an active participant involved in combat, searching, guarding, standing night watch, etc. When I divide up the calculated XP for the session, do I divide the total by 3 (just characters) or by 4 (include the wolf)? The wolf share would then just go away since he advances with the druid.
The rules would seem to indicate that I divide the XP by 3 (just the players) because it mentions in an example that if you defeated a drow wizard that summoned a beast to help him fight, you would only get XP for defeating the drow since his spell ability to summon is included in his CR. Although it is sort of the opposite, this would seem to be the way to think of the druid and his companion wolf.
This is important because if divided three ways, the characters will be 2nd level for the next session (which they will need). If divided 4 ways, they are each about 100xp short of 2nd level.
