Party vs. party

I have a unique situation in my campaign in which my next session will begin with two seperate parties of PCs facing off against each other. I was wondering if this situation has ever cropped up for anyone else who cared to share any amusing ancedotes.

As for the situation in my campaign, I already typed up the details in the Plots & Places forum as I'm looking for suggestions on how best to handle it. I have to warn you that it's sort of a long post and contains spoilers for both Sunless Citadel and Of Sound Mind. Here's the link: http://enworld.cyberstreet.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20083

At any rate, that other thread is for plot advice for my own situation but the reason I started this thread is for others to share their own experiences (...and also to generate some traffic in that forum :D).

well, it isn't amusing when one party gets stomped and the other claims that the first was given more items or such by the d.m......careful you may be about to feel the ire of some players!

Without some sort of prohibition against killing, you can expect a lot of PC death. As a player, I wouldn't have a problem with that as long as I could create a comparible character (points, XP and wealth) afterwards. But some players put a lot of thought into their PCs and don't like the notion of having to put them to rest.

IMCs, the concept of a "party" (a group of adventurering types with a variety of classes working together towards a common goal) is somewhat unique to the PCs. Rarely do the villians utilize such a wide array of talents. Sure...the evil wizard or cleric is going to have some tank body guards or may pay off a roguish type to get some information or assassinate someone, but very very rarely will the PCs encounter 4 or 5 NPCs of comparible level with such a variety of classes...

Usually the villians that are classed in my game will have very similar classes that "make sense" to be working together. For instance, a group of 20 gnolls may have 1 Brb3/Ftr2 as a leader, a Brb4 as a Lt. Two-four Ftr3s as Sergeants and 4-8 Brb1/Ftr1s as veterans. Maybe a few Rangers or Rogues of varying levels to serve as scouts.

All the characters are only second level, so I don't think that having comparable replacements will be much of an issue, although I don't think that anyone will be happy if their character dies anyway. However in this particular case, one party has allies and the other party really dug their own grave in my opinion.
