Pathfinder on the bookstore shelves? Forked Thread: The 3.5 renaissance!

Borders is experiencing major financial difficulties at the moment. They're looking for a buyer, and in the mean time they've vastly trimmed down their offerings. I wouldn't expect much from them until everything gets sorted out (the latest rumor is that the Canadian chain Chapters/Indigo is looking at acquiring them).

Barnes & Noble has a much wider assortment of RPG stuff at the moment. Their 4e displays around here seem to have just about everything, and there's a smattering of White Wolf and assorted other stuff as well (most provided by White Wolf's distribution arm, PSI). I've been seeing the Pathfinder Campaign Setting hardcover again and again recently, though stores seem to have only about two copies at a time and these can sell out quickly. They also seem to stock our books Classic Monsters Revisited and Gods & Magic with some frequency.

I hope Borders and B&N survive the recession. I'm more of a B&N person myself, but I do shop and buy stuff from Borders as well and wouldn't want them to go.

If D&D tanked enough that Hasbro would sell the rights ( which seems unlike since D&D has more value as a brand name than and actual P&P RPG) or even licensed, I would be very curious about what a White Wolf version of D&D would be. ( If scarred lands are any evidence of this then I say it would be awesome.)

I always thought of this too as a big "what if". I think it would be interesting to see what other game companies would do if they owned D&D. If Company X got it, would they make their version of it more retro, more like 3.x, 4e, or would would see some holy (unholy) combination of their own rule system with the D&D name brand on it?

There's no way I'm saying this will or will not happen, again this is just some "what if" exercise and what do you all think would be that result?

I honestly cannot see any future where D&D is no longer an RPG. If WOTC/Hasbro gets out of the tabletop RPG market (and that is a gigantic if), they would likely sell the D&D name and whoever takes up the mantle will likely write a new edition.

From where I sit, D&D isn't going anywhere. It is far too valuable a property.

If I am not mistaken, the Scarred Lands wasn't a White Wolf RPG. It was a Swords & Sorcery Studios RPG that White Wolf was distributing. I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that White Wolf itself had nothing to do with the design or development of that setting.

If any Paizo folks are reading this thread, are you guys doing anything to get more of a presence at these places? Is it part of the gameplan?

Why in the world would anyone buy any Pathfinder stuff from a B&N or any place other than paizo.com? Why would you pay more money for the same product and not get the pdf? Well I am assuming they are still doing that... if they aren't then just ignore this and tell me i am wrong hehe.

Not every player is capable of buying books off the internet; some don't have credit/debit cards or internet capacity (or don't feel comfortable using said cards on said internet...)

And that's not getting into discounts, promos, gift-cards, employee discounts, etc which draw people into a B&M store that you can't find off Paizo.

Maybe you should revisit ( by the wayback machine) ENworld back then a re-read all the hate posts and self selecting sample polls. Heck even try to find the old Wizards forums posts regarding 3e. I see no big difference from what I see now.

It is good to see someone can remember the past. It's fun to ignore the past and think what is going on right now (in gaming or in the world at large) is somehow unique. It’s not. It is just a bit more visible because you don't have to go to cons or your game store (or political rallies) to see the crazy people rail against some perceived slight.

I wasn't on enworld, but I was on WotC back then...do you rember the claims that 3e would die by the next year and someone would buy D&D back and reprint 2e...those were fun...

edit: and I still hear people at cons (Gen con last year) claim 3e is to video gamey...and that WotC killed D&D with 3e...so about the same

Yeah..the rants are all familiar....Heh I remember people saying 3E didn't feel like D&D to them.

Well, I've bought most of my Paizo products either at my FLGS, or ordered them from Amazon.com. Even with the higher (International) shipping costs, I've got some of the stuff for half the price it would have cost me here (in euros). As for PDFs, I don't really need them...

I was at the Gainesville, FL Barnes & Noble today. They had 1 copy of the Pathfinder Campaign Setting and 1 copy of Classic Monsters Revisited. They also had 1 copy each of a number of 4E books (no multiple copies of anything except the Caves of Carnage dungeon tiles set). The only books they *did* have multiples of were some of the Dark Heresy supplements (but not the core book) and Legend of the Five Rings core book (the latest edition). They also had two 3.5 Eberron books.
