D&D 3E/3.5 Pathfinder smite in 3.5

At least in my experience, the paladin must struggle to adjudicate the right time for smiting. And if the BBEG is really worthy of the name, maybe the paladin will not have enough smites to face him and his sidekicks for the final battle.

Is a burst, but fighters will outdamage paladins on the long road.

This is it exactly. Paladins just can't keep up with fighters in terms of dishing out damage. And those smites run out quickly -- and anyone neutral or good is immune to them.

Sounds ok to me...as long as you also re-balance his other feats to the pathfinder norms...IE power attack etc.

I'm still more scared of the mounted combat abuse the charge rules paladins that basically disintegrate anything weaker than elder wyrms on impact when they hit you.

Or any melee character that is allowed to have Pounce.

You should be scared. They get to take down satellites from geosynchronous orbit with well timed charges.
