PbP tool--beta testers wanted

Hi everyone, it's been a month since we first posted our call for beta testers and I wanted to give you an update.

First, to answer the obvious question: we're still not quite ready for beta. We're getting close, but it's taken us longer than we hoped to get the features out.

Second, we are making good progress. I don't want to make the mistake of committing to dates, but the core virtual battlemat feature is in place, and it's pretty spiffy (if I do say so). Now we're working on things like Internet hygiene, user accounts, and so on. Boring stuff that takes time and is required before we go into beta.

Finally, due to things taking longer than we hoped, we're limiting the first beta to just the virtual battlemat. The other features we planned (dice rolling, logging, forum images) will come later. Our thought is that the virtual battlemat is the thing that will really benefit your PbP games--the dice rolling is the other thing that's really important, and that's covered by InvisibleCastle.

That's it for now! I hope to have more for you soon.

Uhm, question. If I understood right, you were talking about an interactive battlemat, accessible and modifiable by the players. Is this still your intention for the beta, or just a battlemat editor similar to Maptool?

Touché...I wonder what kind of file format it will be in and whether Enworld will need changes to allow that kind of attachment.

Yes, we still have the interactive battlemat feature. It's much, much simpler than Maptool. (Whether this is good or bad, I'll leave for you to decide. ;) ) It allows you and your players to upload a map and place/move tokens on that map. Very straightforward. Remember, we're a small team with a small budget, so adjust your expectations accordingly.

What makes it better than Maptool for play-by-post is that it lives online and any of your players can use it at any time, even when you're offline. We're designing it specifically for play-by-post, which is why we'll have features like forum images.

The battlemat itself will live on a website, which will at some point provide a URL for embedding the battlemat in forums. It will work as long as the forum supports embedding image URLs, which it looks like ENWorld does. (If not, you'll have to download the image and upload it manually.)

Thanks for the questions!

Beta starting soon!

Hi everyone,

Not dead yet!

I'm happy to announce that we're getting very close to beta for our play-by-post tool. I want to introduce you to NiddyNoddy, our developer in charge of the beta. She'll let you know the details and get the beta started.

This is a big milestone for us! Thanks for coming along.
