PC fell down pit but it takes standard action to activate Boots of Levitation!

If a PC fell down a pit trap, how many feet would he have to fall before he could activate his Boots of Levitation? Activating a magic item is a standard action, not a free action, so I imagine the PC would have to first fall a "rounds worth" of feet before he could activate the boots.

How many feet does a PC freefall in a round?

For the purposes of a regular pit trap, he falls until he hits the bottom. I wouldn't worry about distance per round until your pit trap was several hundred feet deep...

Using earth gravity (acceleration of 9.81 m/s²) approximated to 10 m/s² and ignoring air resistance.

after 1s: 10m (~30 ft.)
after 2s: 30m (~90 ft.)
after 3s: 60m (~180 ft.)
after 4s: 100m (~300 ft.)
after 5s: 150m (~450 ft.)
after 6s: 210m (~630 ft.)

Or in short... too many! ;)

The Boots are for getting out of the pit; if your PC wants to avoid damage from falling into the pit, he/she needs Feather Falling.

When necessary, I recommend using 500 ft on the first round, 1,000 on any subsequent rounds. (Very close to figures from a skydiving book.)

I know it's not technically "legal", but I'd allow the character a Reflex save - if he makes it, he can activate the boots before he falls. If not, oops... :p

Well, a standard action is only half a round... so 180 ft.
Maybe a little tiny bit more than half, because you can swap standard for move but not move for standard... so perhaps 300 ft.

I'd make it 200 though. Be generous.
Of course, I'd also allow that reflex save to activate it before the fall, as would Sir. Whiskers....

I think I'd also allow a Reflex save on this one (but maybe not in addition to the one for falling in the pit in the first place).
