PC Gen and the OGL?

Cedric

First Post
Am I mistaken, or did PCGen used to offer a lot more stuff in their creation software then they do nowadays?

Now it seems like the only thing in there was core books and a bit of stuff from other publishers. None of the splat books, etc.

Ok, I finally found the information on the net. I must say...this is another reason for me to dislike WoTC.

I really think you should be able to reproduce, print or manipulate someone elses Intellectual Property, as long as you give them full credit and are not charging for the service or product derived from the use of their Intellectual Property.

Does that sound so unreasonable?

Yes. It would make selling products more difficult, and it would make selling electronic products impossible.

(This thread may be closed, I don't know. It's borderline political.)

Yeah, slightly, considering that if you don't act to protect your intellectual property, you can legally lose it. Besides, how is this a bad thing for the PCGen guys? Did you not read the press release here? http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20030224a

Heh, it's not bad for them...it's bad for me, cause now I have to make my characters with like...pen and paper!

The truth is that I can understand why free projects like this have to be kept in check. With "for pay" products like E-Tools, which are vastly inferior to PCGen in many ways, no one would buy E-Tools.

None the less, heh, I would still like the full version with all of the info, just to make my life easier.

The new versions are much more user friendly and let you enter Classes/races/feats quite easily.
We don't use lots of closed content IMC, but the occasional PrC and feats were quite easy to enter. Unless you use every PrC and Feats from every splatbook or FR, that's not a huge amount of data. If you do, I believe the splatbooks are (will be ? ) on sale at www.codemonkeypublishing.com (their forum is called "zoo graffiti").

Plus, the new char sheets are pretty cool. As a DM, making a Troll barbarian in a few clicks and having a html sheet where I can click (rage/normal/exhausted) to have all the modifiers factored in was really very useful for speeding my last game. I haven't tried the last version of PcGEN (5.0) but I heard other temporary effects like spells or abilities have been (or will be?) added.
It's also quite easy to implement some house rules. When my players want to make a PC with the rules from my campaign, they just have to click on the game mode menu and select "MySources". That loads the sources, house rules and PcGen options needed for my campaign.

That's just for trademarks, not for copyright works. Even in the USA, they're different.

sorta. ultimately if you want to add a new prestige class, template or race you still have to open up the .lst file and spend quite a bit of time putzing around in an unforgiving text-only environment to get things to come out properly.
Since the .lst files don't contain anything except the core this happens a lot, even if you don't use those kinds of things regularly.
Spells are OK but evenerythign else is tough. Trying to actually add a template inevitably requires going back to the origional race and creating a copy, then modifying it to properly work with the template.

I keep downloading the new version, saying "this one is going to be the one" and finding out that using it to create anything that is not-by-the-books-core-rules is going to involve a lot more time than just noting the special abiltily down on an index card and moving on.
(Just dealing with prestige classes that gain bonus levels and or abilities that affect stats is going to take a tremendous amount of time).

I realize, btw, that Monk and co are trying about as hard as humanly possible to make things easy to use. I'm just surprised by how hard it is to create. Maybe people with etools are benifting more...
