After about a month of this (this is the only game I ever ran that was weekly...I miss the weekly games) the players did conversate more on their own without realizing it, and I didn't have to pull out the watch as much, but whenever there was a logical long pause in the game, I did pull it out.
The watch time also works when they have only so long for puzzles and riddles, and death traps.
