Yeah I am wondering as well. Perhaps the assassin has some shadow influence and hence can do some magical like things, despite being oestensibly a martial class? Perhaps wizards are going to destroy everyones mind by making it BOTH Martial and Shadow. I mean, heads will explode.

A class that has two power sources? Interesting...

And dude: the power requires a blowgun! This isn't a greatsword-wielding killer! Yay!

It's just an idea, I doubt this is the case at all but it could be one way they did it. Personally like many things in 4E, I don't think they will be particularly worried one way or another if people don't feel its effects are "martial" enough. It might even just be a "This stuff is based off the power of shadow, while most of their techniques are purely martial" or something.
