penalty for cheating

WAIT A MINUTE....

The so-called Discordian is the guy? The guy who's cheating?

Hey, Coik...you think the Goddess would appreciate you messing with her perfect chaos by using Aneristic Dice? You got the stones to call yourself Discordian when you can't even roll a random numeral generator and just say "HAIL ERIS, HAIL HAIL, HAIL YES!" no matter the result, crit or fumble?

You, my friend, have been EATING HOT DOG BUNS. And you are destined to be reincarnated as a MAO BUTTON in the REGION of THUD.

Coik...you're a GREYFACE, not a Discordian. Pbbblllsstttt!!!!

As mentioned above, rpg pourpose is fun not some sort of a match to win. When, in a game, a player need to find additional fun cheating, this can be a signal that there are perhaps too many combat sessions, or simply he don't like roleplaying.

I suggest you to investigate about the interest for the game in your friends, you can be sure that a cheated dice is knowned from all players: when a dice is good all people wanna roll with it...

I hope you understand what i've tried to tell with my poor english.

Idum

I would probably be too harsh on the player. I really don't like cheaters.

If you will cheat on a simple game, where nothing is really at stake, how can anyone trust you when it is important?

I would give them a second chance, but I would be thinking up ways to catch them.

Just about all of us have fudged a die roll at a critical moment. I can live with that.

But I've also dealt with a persistant cheat, and it ruins my fun and screws with the other players. Yes, it's just a game, but if I can just pick up Monopoly properties and stick them in my hand, it stops being a game, it stops being fun.

First time offense, a stern warning. In this case, I then inspect his dice *every single session* and ask the other players to keep an eye on him.

If he does it again, it's "Sorry you refuse to play nice, guess you'll be going now. Hit the road, Jack!"

I've done it before and I would do it all over again, even knowing that it cost me the friendship.

How about taking away a PC level for it? I would probably do something to modify the game against him as a cheater, and who is to say that he won't do it again.

If I were DM, I would offer him a choice of losing a level or sitting out for a while. I would also ask the other players how they felt about it, and what they might think is appropriate. Knowing that the player is embarrassed with his shameful behavior I would use it to my advantage by being openly disappointed with his cheating. Then I would pull him aside and tell him that you won't hold a grudge or penalize him any longer, and as far as I am concerned we don't need to talk about it anymore. One-on-one discussions are usually good for letting the players voice their concerns with the group without repercussions from all IMCs, as long as they are kept private. Go back to having fun!

Wow.

He went to all the trouble of getting or making a 20 sided die with an extra 20 on it?

Does anybody else see this on being a little bit beyond just fudging the roll?

Seriously....the boy's (or girl's) got issues.

Use it as a roleplaying opportunity. His character obviously made a deal with some dark powers in order to grant him success. Use that. I think it's time for the dark power to come looking for his character. They don't just give you powers like that without expecting something in return...

If he does it again, though, I'd boot him from the group.

Make him the GM. This way he can cheat all he wants and no one cares :)

I think I would probably ask a person who did this to leave the game or I would just ignore it (depending on my mood). Either way it is just a game, but I as a GM should not have to baby sit the players. I have enough children in my life (4) and I don't need another one when I'm trying to have fun with my friends.

Also, is this person a friend of yours or just a gaming acquantance? If he's your friend and he is cheating on you (that sounds kind of bad), do you really consider that the act of a friend?

Either way its up to you all we can offer is advice.

P.S. Maybe the "loaded" die was the one he uses for home run demonstrations and it was accidentally used :) Maybe you should check the rest of his dice.

What a sick situation. You are the DM, not a parent. In your shoes, I would oust him - once a cheater, always a cheater.

As a fellow PC, I would also make efforts to oust him. Punishment just demoralizes him and reduces his stature among the group. Really, it's just embarrassing.

Keel-haul him, it's not that he cheated that galls, it's that he got caught, evolution demands his death or cheaters won't improve over the generations....

Seriously, he bought a cheat die and used it for real in agame? I bought some jokingly obvious loaded d6's once and used them to roll a character up in front of the dm and other players to see how long it would take before anyone noticed the rather odd way the dice rolled before almost invariably landing on all sixes, but to to do it with the intention of getting away with it? I mean, why? You know?
