Penny Arcade takes on DDO

I didn't particularly enjoy Penny Arcade until I started to work in the industry - at which point it got about x15 funnier,as I actually understood the in-jokes.

This strip about DDO is telling for me, because my best friend just mentioned they were dropping the game due to not enough content.

Incidentally, Zarathustran - long-time EN Worlder! - works for Penny Arcade and organizes PAX.

Just mentioned dropping the game, just before a new module of content comes out? New area, new dungeons, new raid, and magic item crafting? It's days away.

Ah well, I'm converting an old college buddy of mine today, as we speak. I got your friend's departure covered.

DDO is small and slow to mature, but it still has the best gameplay. No question. At least until the new D&D MMO based on 4e comes out.

Or, maybe I should say, at least until the new D&D MMO that 4e is based on comes out. :]

I'd guessed that Gabe and Tycho didn't organize PAX by themselves, you can tell because there's no monkeys with automatic weapons. I knew they had a business manager. I had thought that was it though. Was I wrong?

Anyway, go Zarathustran! :)

Work with me here. "Just" = a month or two ago, and I'm sure he hadn't heard of the expansion. I'll have to let him know.

Unfortunately, the industry is littered with the barely alive bodies of "slow to mature" MMOs. I hear Anarchy Online is pretty darn good now, for instance, but no one particularly cares any more.

If you don't come out of the gate ready to claim the #1 or #2 spot, you might as well not exist, from the standpoint of most players. And this predates WoW: AO crashed and burned in the era when EQ1 was king.

What exactly is your point, with regards to what you quoted from me?

Should I stop playing DDO, start playing WoW, or what?

Does it matter if either DDO or WoW is fun, or am I just supposed to be playing the #1 or #2 game regardless of quality?

Give me something to take away besides simply stating the obvious.

DDO is surprisingly hanging in there. There were recent posts on the forums that it has a core of players that play all the time...myself and wulf are probably in that group, so please at least veil your insults...and that as long as the game has that big core of diehards, they'll keep making content. DDO isn't going anywhere until they are made to shut down to make way for a replacement. Effectively, as long as you pay the bills, we'll keep working.

There's a whole lot of hearsay being repeated here, and has been since DDO's release, and most of it is exaggerated and biased if it's true at all.

I didn't get the penny arcade strip at all, but it was probably written by an outsider regurgitating things that he's heard in threads like this one.

It doesn't need to be the best, or heaven forbid, the most popular, for it to be a viable game.

Can I ask you to cut back on the caffeine?

I'm saying there's a lot of great games out there that aren't WoW, but that "slow to mature" means they'll never get the same sort of visibility that WoW has. There were a lot of people here at ENWorld who, for a long time, were determined to wish DDO into being the #1 game, despite its maturation process.

Feel free to do whatever you like, especially if it involves not biting the head off someone innocently posting in a discussion thread.

My prior post could not have been delivered more dispassionately (except perhaps in person).

Caffeine had nothing to do with it.

And my saying that it has the best gameplay prompted that observation?

What exactly is the intended message of your observation?

To put it another way....

.... AND?

You should realize that your posts look about as innocent as mine look dispassionate.

You essentially popped in to tell us all that WoW is the biggest game going right now, eclipsing all others. Thanks for the contribution! Whizbang!
