Cantrip Spirit

Hi there,

We picked the cantrip spirit out not just because it's a fresh look at a classic fairy-tale creature, but also because it's one of those monsters that sports fun new crunch (spells, in this case). Nice work on that one, Voadam. It's our pleasure to show off the great work that the Atlas art fellow, Scott Reeves, has done to bring the book's wonderful creatures and terrific illustrations together.

To all of you who've had a peek at the book: what do you think of what you've seen?

To all who haven't been keeping up at the website: where've you been?!

Lines, eh?

Hey Wil,

I'm assuming you mean the guidelines behind the monster statistics? I like them, myself, but I've always been a big fan of textured design. Incidentally, I always found the crinkly paper designs on your former Lairs & Legends books to be a nice balance of texture and readability.

In The Penumbra Fantasy Bestiary, I think having the guidelines behind just a monster's "numbers" is rather a nice compromise (and I honestly had nothing to do with that part of the design!). They're also just one small part of the book's appearance.

What do you all think?

p.s. Check out our next preview monster, the Infiltrator, this week at www.atlas-games.com!

Nice creature, but holy moley! $45 for the book? I'll look at it when it hits the stores, but will there be any color at that price? Or does it just relect the mass of the book?

Hey - what about that cool artwork from good ol' Jesse Mohn? ;)

Me - I've seen a few peeks and I LOVE IT!!! :) I'm just hoping that they post one of my critters as a sneak peak! ;)

EDIT: Congrats to Voadam! :)

Preview Monsters and Book Price

Hi again, everyone,

I'll be getting a new monster on the Atlas website every week, so a nice, big sampling of the book's monsters will be available to all in the coming weeks. I can't say for sure whose monsters will or won't be previewed at this point, though. I don't want to ruin the surprise! :)

Keep in mind, please, that the dozen or so monsters we will have previewed by the book's release will only be about 5% of the monsters in The Penumbra Fantasy Bestiary.

Regarding price: Yes, the book is $45 dollars, black-and-white. It's also 368 pages. That's more pages than the Monster Manuals (224 pages), the EverQuest monster book (211 pages), the Monsternomicon (240 pages) or the Ravenloft monster book (160 pages). The Bestiary is a big book. Seriously*, just trying to carry a print-out of the book down the hall I crushed three of my vertebrae and dislocated my shoulder. I was going to curse and whine and such, too, but I didn't want to upset The Bestiary because it's so much bigger than I am (a mere 210 pages) and it can smell fear. You hear that? Our monster book can actually** smell fear.

Can the Fiend Folio smell fear? No, it can't.

*Not seriously.
**Not actually.

Actually I think the design looks fantastic, I was just kidding. I'm looking forward to this book, the more monsters the better.

In fact, I'd say this would be a great complement to the Monster's Handbook

Great job Atlas!
