People take too long to paint mini's!

I know we all feel we MUST take pride in our mini's painting, but let's get real. The crappiest attempt at a paint job makes me happier as a DM than someone who comes with a penny, die-as-a-mini, or unpainted thingy. Your thoughts? Do you only allow the finest painted mini's on your table? Do you laugh at the guy who has a crappily painted mini?

..or are you happy if someone at least bothers to paint their mini..showing a more-involved attempt at being a player.

Now, as for the DM, I still use steve jackson's cardboard heroes or the D&D pre-paint jobbies...the DM's job is a little tougher by volume...

I paint everything that hits my table aside for the occassional DDM pre-painted monster. I used to ban pre-painted figures completely from my table, but when you have 7 fire giants attacking the pcs I need a lil' help. Thank goodness I have a player who is a DDM fanatic and I don't have to buy any ;)

I would be happy if a player wanted to paint their own figure, but none have in several years. I would not laugh anyone's true efforts at painting - ever. We all start someplace with painting.

I will never allow a pre-painted figure to represent a pc. If a player really wanted to use a DDM, I would insist on re-painting it.

I own a pretty big collection of minis, but only about 30% of them are painted - so I cannot ban unpainted minis - as I cannot paint even one of my own, how can I ask others to do so?

In fact, the only way I have any painted is b/c others have volunteered to paint them for me.

If I felt a need for a mini these days, I would purchase pre-painted ones - as long as they were not too "kewl" or weird looking.

I'm a "slap the paint on the mini" kind of guy myself. I never take more than a few hours to paint a mini (I normally paint a bunch at a time), but I certainly appreciate those who have the patience and skill to take longer and do a better job. Eris404 is in one of my groups and is a top-notch mini painter.

I use anything and everything at my table - 2D paper cut-outs, DDMs, unpainted and painted minis. I don't like the randomness of DDMs, so I have two sets of 2D paper minis that cover the monsters in the SRD. From using them I've also learned how to cut, paste, crop and print out any 2D using images on the WoTC D&D site. This works great for masses of monsters.

IF I have the time and money I purchase and paint metal figs for cool encounters. Just finished a basilisk which was used to good effect, and soon I'll start on five female clerics which should be showing up on the table a week from this Friday.

As for my players, it irks me a little when they insist on using a mini that is nothing like their character. And I mean this from a class/gender/racial perspective.

As for speed I've found I'm faster when I just focus on one mini, but I hate to waste paint. So usually I'll be working on four or five at the same time and striving to getting them all a little closer to being finished.

First of all, I am a rotten mini painter. (Check out my gallery at Cool Mini or Not if you want proof.) Needless to say that while they look horrid to the camera, some of them aren't all that bad on the gaming table. I do take a while to paint them, but that's because I don't paint full time. To me "a while" is a lot less time than some of the better painters out there.

Tz,

I think a painted mini always looks better than unpainted.

I only laugh at my brother's paint jobs, and that's usually because he's laughing before he gets it out of the case to show me. In all seriousness though, much like gift giving it's the thought that counts, and I would rather see an unpainted miniature than a penny, and I'd rather see an attempt at painting over that.
