Peregrinations of the Shard

"It leads to the hidden chamber heretofore called 'down there'. I think it might be something important, but again, I couldn't read it. It was easy getting out, though--I used your girly high-heeled shoes, Rinaldo. I used my Survival skills to track the exact distance down from the main room and Dimension Doored into a spot in the shadows. That could be a way to get back down without risking opening the trapdoor again."

Ironwolf quietly thinks to himself that the psicrystal's delusions are even more irritating now that the pet rock has learned how to make itself heard by others. Fortunately, none of the others seems confused by it's insistance that it is the 'real' Ironwolf.

"So we could Dimension Door from outside the shrine into the hidden chamber? That could make thing a bit easier." replies Rinaldo. "From here, how much time would it take us to reach the point where we could dimension door?"

"It's located near the centre of the shrine and pretty far down. I don't think it could possibly be in range of the outside. There might possibly be a valid target location at some point of the secret staircase, but it's very narrow and twisty, so I'm not sure it would be possible to avoid Dimension Dooring into the wall and dying."

"Now Vanitri, you should remember that modern dimensional magic has incorporated protections against those kinds of mishaps. With the safeguards in place, you don't die any more, but you would risk surfacing at a random location, possibly in front of the elves, and supposedly it hurts like Hell and sometimes causes psychological damage from the extreme disorientation of it."

"What? How large is that shrine? A Dimension door spell can transport at least 600 feet away. I tought it would be something like a small chapel, not a large temple."

"It's somewhere in between, not as big as a whole temple, but the main problem is that there is also what looks like the ruins of a shrine complex around it--nothing fancy, probably just residence for the keepers of the shrine, stables, a place to grow food, and the like. But the elves have guarded the perimeter of the whole complex, and the secret tunnel goes for a long ways before it opens into the underground room."

"Actually, I didn't know exactly how far Dimension Door could go. So--"

"Those shoes nigh-undoubtably will reach 680 feet. If it would making the difference, having one of the three of us cast the spell instead could increase it to 760."

"I think that could actually be enough if you could avoid the elves enough to get right up next to the shrine proper--I think it's about 200 feet from there to the centre of the shrine, perhaps a bit more, and then over 700 feet straight down from there to the secret chamber."

"So call it 210 feet and 720 feet. The square root of 210 squared + 720 squared is 750. That's in range for the casters, but not the shoes."

Ashnar frowns and gets out some paper to quickly sketch the layout described by Vanitri.
"If the chamber is that deep down, a slightly mislocated dimension door should still end up shunting you into the chamber or on the stairs, assuming no other chambers in the vicinity. Still leaves the problem of getting to the shrine and away from it."

"It depends, but it should be easy for the chamber itself. The crucial accuracy is to the nearest 100 feet. If you mess that up, you could wind up almost anywhere in a half-mile radius. I agree that getting to the shrine will not be easy either...Zounds, I wish I could have mastered that Teleport spell, but I just can't, no matter how many times I tried. I'm so close though! It's frustrating."

"Let's go kill some goblins and you will..."

OOC: Just kidding...

"Could we take some rest in the secret chamber, so the casters can replenish there spells? That way, we oculd put everything on the way there and do teh same on the way out." asks Rinaldo to Vanitri.
