Based on the first handful of books we ran a successful campaign about 20 years ago. Mind you I was so young and niave at the time all of the slave-stuff completely went over my head.

I ended up switching the campaign to a homebrew about the time I tried to read Slave Girl of GOR which I never finished and it effectively killed off my interest in the series. So perhaps I wasn't that niave after all!

I believe you're thinking about the bet between Robert A. Heinlein and L. Ron Hubbard that Ron couldn't start his own religion.

The version I heard was that Frank Herbert and L. Ron Hubbard had a bet about who could come up with the most insane religion. Frank invented the Bene Gesserit and L. Ron, Lord of Rivendell, came up with scientology. Only where Frank put his in Dune, Elrond put his in the real wolrd.... and it made them both rich

Any other "<Famous Author 1> only invented <Famous Idea> because of a bet with <Famous Author 2>" type stories?

Well roughly 2000 years ago the Demiurge and I were shooting the breeze while getting drunk as skunks and I bet him that I could trick a human into thinking he was the son of YHWH and that he was sent to redeem mankind and what-not, he said "no way!" and bet me the keys to his 57' chevy. I said you're on fool and viola look what happened.
