Periphats of wisdom and such

You don't lose spells when you lose intelligence in combat. You might lose the ability to cast spells of x level if your int drops below 10+x.

You lose all the other benefits of the wisdom bonus just like when you lose strength but not spell slots.

Only effects like level drain that state you lose spells cause such an effects.

Good point. But in the end, it's 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other. Put on periphat, get spell - take off periphat, can't cast spell, i.e. lose spell. Either way, you can't cast the spell until you put the periphat back on, which is why it would be pointless to pass it around.

Sounds like this interpretation totally screws the druid. If I wildshape I lose the spell slot. If I take the item off, shapeshift, and then put it back on in animal form, I still lose it, because I took it off.

Two things: First if you lose the slot, why would it be random? Couldn't you just lose an empty slot (say from a previously cast spell)?

Second: The ability to memorize/prepare a spell slot is conferred by the higher ability. Once gained, why would it be gone due to loss of ability. If you die (all stats to 0), then are resurrected, you still have a chance of retaining spells previously prepared.

The 24 hour rule (given some latitude for shapeshifted inactivity at times), prevents the abuse of passing it around. Interpretted otherwise again shafts the druid for doing one of his primary functions, which is wildshaping, which is very cool, but also comes with a whole stack of limitations.

Like I said, wildshape into something that can use the periphat and you can still cast the spell

As far as I know there is no natural animal that you can wildshape into that can cast spells (unless you have wild feats that allow this). But the point is that when you wildshape, all of the items on you become inactive - including the periapt of wisdow. If you turn into an animal that can use an item, like a necklace let's say, you still have to take it off, shapechange, and then put it on. Again, based on the remove the item or deactivate it by shapechanging and you lose the slot, you're screwed.

You must keep the improved ability score for 24 hours before gaining a benefit... no passing around the periapt, k?

You don't lose the extra spell slot unless your ability score dropped for over 24 hours. So if you have been wearing a periapt for 3 days straight, then lose it, you have 24 hours before you lose that bonus slot. You shouldn't lose a bonus spell for Wild Shaping, unless you do so continuously for 24 hours. Instead, you'll lose save DC, Will save bonuses, and bonuses to Wis checks and skills until you gain it back.

Can you tell me where that is stated?

For the wildshape thingy: I would handle it differently whether you lose the Item it just becomes inactive (at least concerning bonus spells).

The 24 hr rule is from Sage Advice. I think it was from when the Psionics Handbook came out.

Its Periapt people, not the 5 alternate spellings used so far.

This is probably a good place to mention that abilitiy boosting spells, even if they're up 24 hrs a day, do not grant you any bonus spells. Better to stick with your parfairiapt.

Hmm. I was under the impression that they did. An ability boost is an ability boost, whether it's from a parfreiapt or an Owl's Wisdom spell. The only thing is that the Owl's Wisdom spell would normally run out before the time comes to prepare spells again, unlike the parphripette.

I envision a party of wizards passing around the pariphet while memorizing spells. I think I might just have a problem with that. This seem odd to anyone else?

Not really. I mean, it's like a peace pipe thing. Or maybe a bong. As everyone knows, when you pass around a bong, you become all mellowed out and peaceful and one with the universe and sh*t. This is clearly a Wisdom boost if ever there was one. I see no reason the same shouldn't hold with a parapette.
