Permanency - looking for best spells

In our campaign world most buffs have visual effects, that might be strange going to bed with a shield of faith lighting the room. :)

My 20th level cleric has it permenenced on himself and several of his followers that he sends out on missions for him. I even dispell and recast and repermenence it every level. And we do the same thing with visual effects and such in the campaign I play in. Course he also used a miracle to by pass the light effect because it started to become a pain when trying to sneak up on enemies while invisible.

Just remember that whichever spell you use for this it can be dispelled. This doesn't really matter as much at lower levels but at higher levels my party normally starts off combat with a Greater Dispel Magic and so does the enemy. This really sucks when it comes down to the Permancy spell and the loss of XP. Since this is a scroll the loss of XP doesn't matter but the loss of the spell might. I would personally get a utility spell (such as tongues or arcane sight) that will help out a lot all the time, than one just for combat.

My 2 cents.

The opposing dispeller needs to be atleast 1 level higher then the person that cast the permanency. It's why I recast it every level. And I think even then it only suppresses it for a bit. Not sure about the suppressing part but sure about the atleast one level higher part.

Suppresion is a house rule. It's a house rule I've seen suggested several times, but as Permanency is written, if the spell is dispelled, it's gone. Just like Polymorph Other - duration Permanent - can be dispelled.

Hmm

Well, i dunno why the DM chose to put 2k xp on the scroll.

My first thought was "true seeing" when i heard about the scroll, but then the group shouted "shield". For my own luck i am (again, some may remember the thread with the DM ruling keen weapons unmagical...i am still glad i didn't have to stand that ruling - still giggle when thinking about it...) NO member of the group and NOT the DM...hehe. I would have thought about sanctuary. But then there is this oh so small list in the PHB and since they are allowed nothing except the core rulebooks it might just be that list of choices.

So, Tongues, like was said before, might be the best choice.

Don't knock Proection From Arrows - at the level the scroll is likely cast it's probably worth a DR 10/+3 (for a total of 120/day).

And if he allows spells not on the list, look closely at the ability buffing spells, expeditious retreat, fly, and haste.

You probably won't get the last two past him, but it's always worth a try.
