Persistent Question

Hi. I've been looking with great enthusiasm at the possiblities for Persisent spells, reading threads of EN World members who lists them.

Then I got all excited. Listing all the level 1 Persisents that my Artificer and Wizard with the Persistent feat can cast!!!

Then it struck me. Tell me if I'm right. If I am, I'm not sure what all the hoopla is about. Hehe.

Persistent feat adds +4 SL. That means for someone to cast a persistant level 6 spell, he'd have to be...what...level 19? Does the feat affect the level of the spell (ie a level 1 persisant spell is a level 5 spell, so a Wizard has to be level 9 to cast it)?

If so, does the +2 on caster level mean that my Artificer has to be level 9 before he can create a persistant Expeditious Retreat Wand? Or level 12 to create a Persistant Veil of Shadows Wand?

If so, I'm quite disappointed that all the Artificer Guides I've read basically assume you are level 12 to 19!!! 12 levels is gonna be several years real time, and 19's just not gonna happen. Hehehe.

Interestingly enough, one wellmeaning guy in his rather lengthy and informative "Arifticer's Handbook" listed a "Must Have" item as: "-Expeditious retreat eternal wand: (CL 1, 820 gp)." Along with many others including some persistant level 9 spells. http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=520855

Is he correct, or is he smoking old tennis shoes?

Persistant spell adds 6 levels to the spelllevel normally. I must admit that I dont use the Artificer class, so I dont know if there are any special rules for them.

EDIT: Just checked out the link, and the list of spells are all spells that can be made persistant, level non-withstanding, as when you go into epic levels, it is possible (eventually).

The quote directly from Tome and Blood, pg 41: "A Persistent spell uses up a spell slot four levels higher than the spell's actual level."

Since you are using an artificer, I assumed you were playing 3.5. And in 3.5, persistent spell is +6 levels, as per the complete arcane or complete mage (dont have my books with me atm).

Tome and Blood is a 3.0 book.

Hope that clears it up.

Spells modified with metamagic use up higher-level spell slots (meaning you need to have access to those higher slots, e.g. be a higher-level caster), but are still considered of the original level for all purposes. Mage Armor is level 1 no matter if you make it Reach Chain Persistent.
