Well it seems like it has connections with the Sci-Fi Channel version which I adored and Children of Dune one as well. So hopefully this will be good, maybe they could get some of the same actors again.

Also, yes, yes it was, David Lynch's was that bad. RAIN!!! WTF!!!

Yes, yes - it absolutely was.
I take it then you won't be wanting to borrow my Special Edition DVD, the one I got to replace my well-worn VHS copy, which I got to augment my own personal memories of the film which I've seen numerous times since it was released in 1984?

(Lynch's Dune is one of the my favorite SF films; a beautiful failure that ends up being more compelling than a lot of films I call successful.)

No it wasn't.

Maybe the film wasn't great, but it filled in a lot of the visuals of the books. It has become a cult classic.

I read the books, when I learned there was a movie I went out in search of it, at the time it was difficult to get/rent (1990 or so). After watching it the Dune universe made a lot more sense, and I loved the movie becaue of it. The weirding modules might not be from the books, but it gives an interesting twist to the movie. Many years later the miniseries did the books more justice then the movie did, but I still like the movie.

My advice:
1.) Read the Book(s)
2.) Watch the Movie
3.) Watch the miniseries

I doubt it'll disapoint you...

I always saw the original Dune movie as in and of itself a great Sci-Fi movie. Only when compared to the book it was based on does the movie fall flat on its face...

just dont compare the two! I mean for goodness sake! Sting in a knife fight! How much does that rock! and it stars Jean Luc Piccard! Still the best Gurney Halleck EVAR!

QFT!

I saw the original Dune movie before I knew there were books. So I got to enjoy the movie before having anything to compare it with. Once I read the books, all the visuals of the characters in my head were taken from that movie, so the two blended together quite a bit in my brain. I know now that there were some big differences, but back then they didn't seem so big or horrible. I saw and liked the Sci-Fi miniseries and was glad to see a more faithful treatment of the books, as well as going further with the stories. Not sure what to think of yet another version of the movie coming. It'll give us more to discuss and debate I suppose.

Loved the book before I saw the movie. I was unable to disassociate the two and ended up really disliking the movie. I thought the mini-series was pretty good. I have concerns that this just isn't a story well suited to a ~2 hour format and any attempt to do so will also fall flat.

I would reccomend reading the book after watching. The book is too good and raises your expectations of how the world should look. You'll be disappointed when the images on the screen don't live up to your imagination.
