Leather for 1rst level rogues.
Masterwork Studded Leather for rogues and rangers (stealthy types) until a
Mithril Chainshirt or Chainmail is available; then a
Mithril Breastplate then either
Admantine or Mithril Full plate

Everything else is has disadvantages over the ones stated.
If a PC has any of the others they found it in treasure and are waiting either to sell it or until they get one of the aforementioned armors.

As games become more computer-dependent, and crossovers between tabletop RPGs and CRPGs and online platforms for PnP and everthing in between become more the need of the many, it may behoove some designers to ensure all things scale perfectly from bottom to top and to remove obvious clunkers from the mix but that flies in the face of more realistic simulations, IMO.
I'd say that, as long as you're allowing for a "poor quality" trait, you're not impacting realism so much as specificity. Crappy orc-made hide armor would still be in the game world, and still be modeled with appropriate mechanics; it just wouldn't exist as a specific item on the equipment table.

I have to ask.... did he take the ARMOUR off of the hobo or the HIDE off of the hobo.

Was wondering the same thing. All that living outdoors in harsh conditions probably *does* toughen up a hobo's hide. ;)

That's what I always see. I wish they'd spread out the +'s and -'s of the armors more evenly, so a person could reasonably wear magical scale-mail or whatever.

I hardly even see breastplate since people that would normally use that armor would rather take a -1AC hit for the extra 10' of movement.

Last step: Celestial Chainmail. Or better: Millenial Chainmail.

Of course, that implies that the future of D&D is as some computer-paper hybrid, not bloody likely.

Well, for my games, it is about 80% mithril chain shirts, because it is simply the best armor for every reason (even non-proficient users have not problems by the RAW.)

It is just plain too good. When Full plate is only 4 more armor higher, there is little reason to sue it, and comparing all the medium armors to the chain shirt, there is absolutely no reason to wear them.

As a DM or Player? As a DM ... all of them, and a good mix thereof just for variety.

For my PCs, I trend toward studded leather & chain shirts for most characters, with the fighters & clerics going scale or splint. Mechanically, though, there are really only two armors worth having: chain shirt and plate.
