PHB gods

Ah, so Greyhawk does indeed use the same "full" racial pantheons as FR and other settings - or perhaps more accurately they use the same racial pantheons as Greyhawk. Interesting that I've never heard of some of those gods, though - they must never have made it into the non-Greyhawk material.

The Hero-Gods were added in the LGJ. They were added to show that others besides the old-guard (Kelanen, etc) had achieved a level of greatness over the last twenty years.

The god list in the LGJ is very complete, but doesn't, IMO, give the pantheonic effect that is so common in "real" mythology. If someone's looking for a more classic pantheonic approach, I'd suggest looking up Talmeta's Greyhawk God write-ups on the internet. There might be a link to them from Canonfire as well. Tal does a great job of giving Greyhawk Gods the "family" feel.

yup, core racial gods are the same ... there a few demi-gods that have been added, those are mostly world specific.

Ye'cind is one that I like

I think shevarash is really cool too.

... course Zagyg is probably my favorite :)

That is one thing I have always found sort of "wimpy" about the Greyhawk / FR worlds - while great detail is given to differentiate the human deities of the specific campaign world, the EXACT SAME Demi-human deities are used from world to world.

The major exception I can think of is the Dragonlance campaign, where the same 24 or so gods are worshipped by ALL races, because these same gods had a hand in the creation of all beings, not just specific races.

Or course, Dark sun doesn't count - there WERE no gods. :)

Well, if lack of dieties is a problem, and you are playing in Grayhawk, you could always pick up the Living Grayhawk Gazzeteer, which has all the gods in Grayhawk. There are maybe... 2 or 3 times the amount of gods or so than are listed in the PHB.
72 deities IIRC - but they include all PHB deities except for the nonhuman ones...

Umbragia: Realms fo Shadow

In my Umbragia campaign, a whole new cosmology is used, so the PHB Gods are not available. The old Gods are dead, adn teh Demi-Gods do the best that they can...

Coupled with teh fact that the magic system is slightly different, and you have a lot more options for Clergy.... no, my players have never complained :)

I will give you my opinion... the PHB gods are not enough for me... they lack variety and many are race based. So Moradin would fit a human very well and so forth.

Keep in mind that the PHB only features 19 of the approx. 110 published Greyhawk gods. They are also toned down a bit detail wise, or changed to fit a generic "core" world.

Reading the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer entries for the PHB gods will give you a better idea of the intended flavor and role for them, even if you don't wish to include the rest of the pantheon in your game.

This question applys to players and DMs. If your group uses only the gods listed in the PHB, has anyone in your group (especially players playing clerics) expressed disatisfaction with them? In other words, have they said they want more gods, better gods, different gods, more domain options (like those in the FRCS), etc...

Thanks.

I've rarely run into this problem as only in a handful of situations has this (using only PHB gods) arise in my games as I'm usually doing Forgotten Realms or Scarred Lands. However, when small games are needed and detail isn't demanded, then yup, those are the gods to go with and there aren't a lot of complaints because I let the players know up front that it's a limited game to test something or try something out and everyone is cool with that.

On the other hand, longer term campaigns may have issues not because there aren't enough gods but because there aren't enough details.

Only the ones that didn't play in the Scarred Lands. :p :)

If anyone wants gods, there's twenty-some there with more to come, mostly stolen directly from Monstrous Myth, and the references in the Monster Manual. It's P-Kitty Approved!

Religion plays a BIG role in my campaigns, as does culture....but I'm a cultural anthro/religious studies major, so there ya go....:)
